Nah, you don't, I used a paint roller and a paint brush. Bought a can of POR 15 High Temp paint and painted the muffler with the roller since I was concerned about overspray. I used the brush to paint the hard to reach areas by the tips. It came out great. Word to the wise, open up your garage door before painting or just do it outside.
