Pasted from stealthhitch:

The vehicle capacities with the BMW M2 trailer hitch are:
3,500 pounds - gross trailer weight (GTW)
250 pounds - tongue weight (TW)

They must be getting the ratings from somewhere. If you call to ask, let know what they say.
Yeah I'll give em a shout, I highly suspect they base it off of engine selection. For example for anyone of the n55's with a tow rating they'll base it off of the lowest rated one. Unless they spent alot of time testing it (highly doubt it unless they have an m2 in shop, and a customer car could be damaged doing so) it is likely an estimation based on a blend of other n55 cars and what the m2 can carry as a gross vehicle weight.
Good to see the trailer options ppl implemented, however, I don't have the space in the garage and am thus stuck fitting 4 tires, floor jack and 2 jack stands, 2 x 5 gal jugs of gas and my tools and clothes into 2 waterproof 20 gal plastic bins. And I still have space for a (fit) passenger.
