Heh, I'm torn too. The techie in me is pretty excited about the above, for sure. There's just no way traditional cars are going to compete, especially in terms of putting precision power to the ground. (Also, unless they build in obsolescence, they should last longer and be easier to fix... lots less moving parts, no messy coolant systems, etc.)

But, I'm also going to really miss the growl of the engine and the level of mechanical craftsmanship that has been achieved.

It's a moot point, though, for most of us, until battery tech takes a couple of big steps (I've heard promising things about aluminum based tech). For example, if I went to Vancouver and picked up a Tesla... there's currently no way to make it back home w/o finding a friend in-between who'd let me visit and borrow their power for a night.

The i8 is actually about the closest thing to realistic in terms of electric... but w/o the above advantages of simplicity (and, other nonperformance hybrids).
