The effort to get into reverse and 5th/6th (and therefor what centers the lever) is controlled by detents in the transmission. It is common as as transmission ages for these to wear out (sometimes called the 5th gear lean) where it doesn't center anymore.

These are very simple passive devices and they aren't that hard to replace... once you get the transmission out of the car. Since they are simple and your car is still new it is unlikely these have worn out or broke.
However, if you are pulling it all the way to the left (but not going into gear) and it doesn't want to forcefully go back to center, you have a problem with the detents.
