I personally had a set in my old E93 for 2 years with no heel pad and it was my everyday driver and the mats still look like new.
The leather heel pad will obviously wear better than the velour, but even so, the velour heel pad is of a high quality and wears extremely well.
So far I have had no issues or complaints from anyone about the durability of these mats.
But, as with everything else, it will also be subject to how well you look after them.
This is what mine look like after 2 years without being detailed, just vacuumed clean.
