Im having the same issue. Also 6S. Also 10.1.1. Same thing you described exactly. Super frustrating.
Also noticed other strange anomalies. Pandora refusing to connect through carplay for one. Also, maybe 30% of the time when I try to play music stored on my phone though the Apple Music app, the interface comes up and I press play but nothing plays. Today it did it but when it played it was playing through the speakers on the phone, not the car. WTF. I could use the iDrive controller and the in car display to roam through my music content on the phone and play different songs, that all played out the phone speakers instead the car speakers. I'm starting to wish I had my $300 back. Carplay is a big letdown thus far.
