I gave long hard thought to the Model S (it does drive nicely and the torque is just fabulous) but in the end, I couldn't make it work. Range anxiety, out of pocket cost, quality issues with Tesla, value for money, etc.

Assuming you hold onto the car for long enough for it to pay for itself, doesn't the money you save go out the window in resale value as the battery degrades or needs replacement?

Yes. The M2 owners manual states that these parts will wear faster when the start stop function is utilized.
