This is a wild hypothesis. Now a days the spherical bearings are pretty tight and have minimal play and if they did have play you get a slight rattle/knock noise not necessarily a knocking noise which I have seen in the past.

It would be interesting to know when you torque down the top hat is if it is really seating against the piston properly ie vertical play. You would only know if you torque down the hat without the spring and see if there is any play there. I have seen this back in the day when either there is not enough thread on the piston or the camber plate didn't have the correct thickness.

If there was play in the 2 plates I reckon you would pick this up with a physical inspection.
