For rear reflectors, I took the wheels off which gave me way more room. The tabs that hold in the reflectors are strong and I didn't want the holes to be ruined prying the old ones out (or scratch the paint in the process). While I have used VCDS extensively for Audi/VW, I haven't learned e-sys yet. Bimmercode made it wicked easy to code everything I wanted. It does have an expert mode which also allows you to access "almost" everything you can on the comp.
