Don't know his particular situation, but unfortunately, motivated thieves can take almost anything these days. Electronic devices can be obtained relatively inexpensively on the web that can latch onto and control your key remotely, amplifying the signal. The thief sits in his car outside your house, hacks your key that's sitting safely on your bedroom dresser, amplifies the signal so that it unlocks and starts your car in the driveway, and he's off. How to prevent this? Keep your car keys in your fridge, freezer or microwave. The metal insulation keeps it inaccessible to remote hacking. I kid you not.
This is true, I know a few people where they got the Key mapped just from someone else being near....
