The E36 motors seem to just keep going and going and going. The 1993 318i I gave to a family member just crossed 300K miles and is still going just fine. I doubt that the N54 or N55 that I have in either of my current BMWs will last that long.
"Better" depends on what's important to one at the time. When my car is new, "better" means it pulls really strong whenever I need it to, and I don't have to coddle it with kid gloves to keep it that way. After the manufacturer's new car warranty expires, "better" means I don't have to keep fixing things with motor and that when I do have to fix something, it's 4+ years before I have to fix something else.
For other folks, "better" may mean it's easier to modify so it goes faster. Or it could just mean that it's outright faster (when new). Others may instead feel that "better" means inexpensive and easy to fix.
All the best.
