I get the general rationale, but as a serious buyer I'm not particularly inclined to basically work out a deal prior to test driving. Curious if anyone has experienced this and if there are ways to actually test.

When I was looking at getting an allocation for my 2020 M2C, I had two dealers lined up for test drives. Drove one, ended up buying from the other-- it was never remotely a problem.
Having the SA go with you so you don't ham hand the car, do burnouts, or mess with the run-in protocol? Fair enough.
But if they won't let you test drive the car at all?
Walk away.
