The 18" winter tire (Michelin PA-4)/wheel set (bought from BMW dealer) is noticeably softer. Not day and night itself, but it pushes it to a point where I'm not bothered by the ride, can enjoy the M2, and want to take it, even on these rough, congested, boring local roads..
Recently I had the M2 trucked out from NJ to LA, then drove it up the coast to ~Eureka CA, over through NV, UT, CO (hiking in national parks in each) then back to NJ. It gave me a different perspective on the M2's suspension. It was perfect on most of the exciting roads in that area. Particularly in NV, UT and CO where they actually maintain the roads unlike in NJ. The M2 in that environment not only handles well on its firm suspension, it's a comfortable cruiser. I was wondering if the M2 would be more fatiguing, ride and noise, than our F30 in which we did a similarly long road trip from NJ to MT and back last year. It really wasn't: M2 seats more comfortable, though car noisier, but much better stereo, ride is fine on reasonable roads. It's about a wash fatigue wise v the F30 on such a long trip, but more fun to drive. In *some* places in CA and later on IL and WV particularly the roads were bad enough to make it a chore to endure the M2 at times. Also the pavements were very noisy in some places (CA-1 in Northern CA in places and US-54 in the TX Panhandle were examples) even where the surface was smooth enough. But generally the M2 did very well on this trip. Whereas, it tends toward uncomfortable on a significant % of the crap roads here in the NYC area of NJ, especially on the 19"/OEM Conti summer tire* combo used on this trip.

*which caused a bit of nervousness when a May snow storm hit in CO, we fled south to NM.
