The E9x guys have swapped M3 clusters over to the 335i as have the 135i and with 1M cluster.

The common theme is that 'retrofitted' clusters need to be "coded" to match the VIN of the car.

Also in BMWs, the vehicle's mileage is stored (shadow copy) in various modules. So just putting a new cluster in will cause a mismatch in the reported mileage value and you may see "tamper warnings".

That said, the coding process I would assume "Virginizes" the cluster too so that after coding, it picks up the true mileage value by syncing with the order modules (that record mileage).

Finally, it seems that service history logs may not appear correctly. Something to do with date mismatches - from the various google threads I could not see a solution for it yet.
