Lightbulb BMW M2 Competition: production, order dates, engine specs & more (pre-launch info)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
LATEST UPDATE: FEB 12, 2018

APRIL 2017: some interesting info surfaced in the M2 section of the German forum '2erTalk' (sources: here, here and here):
  • January 2018: M2 CS ordering process starts
  • March 2018: M2 CS goes into production | S55 engine | 410 hp | no limited edition
  • March 2019: M2 GTS (or M2 CSL?) goes into production | S55 engine | 450 hp | limited edition/production (the '999' figure has been heard, but could change)
Time will tell if the above information is accurate. Interesting, to say the least. First time that I read that the M2 GTS is definitely scheduled. I thought it was just some pipe dream. But actually, this could make sense if you consider BMW M special models history: a limited edition M2 GTS as the final curtain call for the first-generation M2 (end of production: 2020).

A 2016 production schedule screenshot (deleted in the meantime) showed that the M2 CS was scheduled to go into production in March 2018 at the BMW Leipzig factory (source: here). "F87CS" was mentioned, rather than "F87COMP" or "F87COMPETITION". Also coders retrieved "F87CS" in the system codes:

(source: here)

'M2 COMPETITION' UPDATE #1 (AUGUST 2017): forum fellow ynguldyn kindly shared in a few comments in a dedicated M2 CS thread some of his collected M2 CS info, which we could summarize and detail as follows:
  • Body colors (source: source):
    • base M2 body colors: Alpine White (300), Black Sapphire Metallic (475), Mineral Gray Metallic (B39) and Long Beach Blue Metallic (C16)
    • M2 CS body colors: Alpine White (300), Black Sapphire Metallic (475), Long Beach Blue Metallic (C16), Sunset Orange (C1X) (added color) and Hockenheim Silver (C33) (added all-new BMW color) (thus no Mineral Grey Metallic (B39) available for the M2 CS)
  • Interior (source 1 and source 2):
    • base M2 interior: black Dakota leather (LCNL) with Polar Blue stitching only - regular leather only
    • base M2 CS: black Dakota leather with choice between Polar Blue stitching and Orange stitching (Kyalami Orange like the 1M ?) - choice between regular leather and perforated leather
  • Gearbox (source 1 and source 2):
    • base M2: choice between M-DCT and manual gearbox
    • M2 CS: despite initial unfortunate signs of M-DCT only (see here), not all hope has flown yet for the availability of a manual gearbox M2 CS (for the record: last Winter an M2 test mule with carbon fiber strut brace à la M3/M4 and manual gearbox has been spotted at BMW M HQ: see here sourced from here)
  • "M2 Competition" and "M2 CS" (versus "Competition Package" and "M Performance Package") (source):
    • "M2 Competition" and "M2 CS" are two different names for the same car; BMW used both names in the past; also "F87CS" = M2 CS;
    • first known surfacing of the "M2 Competition" name:
      • Sep 16, 2016: a post on a German BMW enthusiasts forum reported to have heard from a BMW source about "a limited CSL or GTS or an unlimited "Competition"" (see here);
      • Oct 12, 2016: production of test mule WBS2U7C53KVB08868: "M2 Competition - USA" (see public BMW VIN decoder);
    • to be distinguished from "Competition Package" (ZCP): normally merely indicated as an option (hence "package") in the BMW system ("Comp pack doesn't get its own 'Typschlüssel' and a line in that file. 'Typschlüssel' is assigned based only on vehicle model, LCI status, engine model and revision, transmission model and revision, and drive type. Comp pack, on the other hand, is simply a couple of lines in the options list." - see here); by the way, no trace of any M2 ZCP in the works, if any, as we speak;
    • also to be distinguished from "M2 Performance Edition" (ZL9 option - see here) or "M2 M Performance Package": base M2 with an M Performance Parts package (for example 50 on offer in the Canadian market from September until December 2017: see here).
'M2 COMPETITION' UPDATE #2 (AUGUST 2017): some interesting VIN info excerpt leaked of an M2 CS ("M2 Competition") - USA model (see here).

The few leaked specs indicate an S55 3.0 litre engine with a 302 kW power output. The test mule was built in the BMW Leipzig factory (same production facility of the base M2), has the all-new Hockenheim Silver body color (BMW paint code C33) and features perforated black Dakota leather seats with blue stitching.

This confirms the earlier info that the M2 CS gets indeed the S55 engine sporting approx. 410 hp (metric) (302 kW = 410.6 hp (metric/EUR) = 405 hp (mechanic/USA)). Thus a 40 hp power bump compared to the base M2, albeit with a different engine (the S55 instead of the N55).

'M2 COMPETITION' UPDATE #3 (SEPTEMBER 2017): VIN info of 20 USA-spec "M2 Competition" test mules has leaked (see here with comment here):

M2 Competition - USA (2U73) | F87 (MUE) | COUPE | LL (= LHD) | S55 | 3.0 | 302 kW (= 410 hp [metric] or 405 hp [mech]):
  • 2U71 = M2 Competition - EUR - LHD
  • 2U72 = M2 Competition - EUR - RHD
  • 2U73 = M2 Competition - USA - LHD
Couple of points to note when taking a closer look at those USA-spec VINs:
  • name: M2 Competition (not, or no longer, "M2 CS")
  • colors:
    • Alpinweiss 3 - paint code 300
    • Black Sapphire Metallic - paint code 475
    • Long Beach Blue Metallic - paint code C16
    • Sunset Orange Metallic - paint code C1X
    • Hockenheim Silber Metallic - paint code C33
  • upholstery: Black Dakota Leather:
    • LCNL = plain leather + blue contrast stitching (Leder Dakota/schwarz Kontr.blau)
    • LCNZ = plain leather + orange contrast stitching (Leder Dakota/schw./kontr.orange)
    • MDB2 = perforated leather + blue contrast stitching (Led.dak.des.perf.schwarz/blau)
    • MDOE = perforated leather + orange contrast stitching (Led.dak.des.perf.schwarz/orange)
  • transmission:
    • manual transmission = stock
    • M-DCT = optional (option code 2MK)
  • wheels:
    • 437M 19" double-spoke bi-color/black wheels (base M2) = stock (code 2VZ)
    • 788M 19" Y-spoke forged lightweight wheels = optional (code 2QT or code 29U)
  • trim:
    • interior trim high gloss black with chrome trim finishers = stock (code 4LU)
    • interior trim finishers carbon fibre = optional (option code 4MC)
    • exterior trim: individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features (kidney grilles, M gills and tailpipes: high-gloss black) (option code 7M9) (incompatible with code 4LU: either code 4LU or optional code 7M9)
      (EDIT: on recent 2U71 pre-series cars, code 7M9 has become a standard feature, instead of optional)
  • M Sport Brakes = optional (option code 2NH)
  • seats:
    • Sport Seats Front Driver/Passenger = stock (code 481)
    • M Sports Seat = optional (option code 712)
  • M Seat Belts (black with ///M stripes) = stock (code 4GQ)
  • Park Distance Control front and rear = optional (option code 508)
  • M Driver's Package = optional (option code 7ME)
  • almost all base M2 options available
  • no retractable armrest front (base M2 code 4AE)
  • backseats do not feature folding headrests (base M2 code 5DC)
'M2 COMPETITION' UPDATE #4 (DECEMBER 2017):
  • Autumn 2017: 'M2 Competition' PR campaign cars have been built (see here);
  • 2018: release and presentation of the M2 Competition; presentation location currently still unknown:
  • mid 2018: M2 Competition (3.0 S55 engine - 302kW) replaces the base M2 (3.0 N55 engine - 272 kW);
  • Sep 1, 2018: further step of EU6c emissions regulations implementation takes force in the European Union; non-compliance by a vehicle manufacturer = EU national authorities shall refuse to grant EC type approval or national type approval and shall consider certificates of conformity to be no longer valid and prohibit registration, sale or entry into service of non-compliant vehicles (see here, here and here);
  • late 2019: though still unclear, a more powerful M2 sibling (3.0 S55 engine) is rumored to be scheduled for release; likely named "M2 CS" instead of "M2 CSL" (see here, here, here, here and here); resources assigned to work on this M2 variant project are rumored to be scheduled until August 2018 (here); the '999 cars' production figure has already been rumored a couple of times (see here, here, here and here).

(source: here).

Production schedule of the "M2 Competition" (logged in the system as "M2 CS" - the "M2 CS" name may return for the 2019 M2 variant):
  • scheduled start of production: March 2018
  • scheduled end of production: October 2020

'M2 COMPETITION' UPDATE #5 (JANUARY 2018):
  • VIN specs & features of over 100 pre-production BMW M2 Competition cars: see here;
  • in VIN sheets of ALL test mules (October 2016 through today), the model name was now changed from "M2 Competition" to "M2 Cs". The "M2 Competition" model name has vanished from all VIN sheets. However, according to some sources, the model name "M2 Competition" is still showing up on the BMW internal system.

They're suggesting that it switches from N55 to S55 as CS in March and N55 is no longer built.

So what I've gathered so far is that there will be an M2CS. The evidence for that is the production schedule and mostly all the cars that we see running around the nurburgring.

Where/What is the evidence for the M2 GTS ?

I am trying to see if there was anything other than someone telling(guessing) that there will be an M2 GTS in 2019.

Also, does that screenshot of the production schedule tell us if the M2/M2 LCI will also be produced while the M2 CS is being produced or does it say that it will be a replacement ??. It looks more and more like there won't be an M2 LCI and that the M2 CS will replace the M2/M2 LCI.

It's been discussed in the past that the CS will replace the current version as the standard version. The GTS is too extreme for my needs. I'm worried that the CS isn't going to get the special upgrades like exhaust and suspension. Leaving the door open for a special edition CS.....And on and on. Make you wonder if the "big brake" test mule is the GTS.

I mean when it comes to GTS, if the price is not extreme then I'm down to buy the "extreme" GTS version since I'm only gonna drive the car for the weekend probably. My only concern is the transmission for sure. I want the manual.

there are test mules of the standard car with the LCI lights on, and then there are ones of the CS version with LCI lights. So, there should be two versions, the regular M2 LCI and the M2 CS (or whatever it will be called) with LCI. Common sense and logic would dictate that. The M3/M4 are offered in standard trim level or Comp trim level, and the CS adds another trim level to the M4.

If the ordering starts in January for the CS does this mean we could see the car in the Frankfurt auto show?

So on the B58 debate front, you *might* just see a switch then in mid 2018 to coincide with production of the S55 CS. This would finally end production of the N55.

Limited production M2 GTS...like the M4 GTS...they will be shoved in collections or garages because they are "too valuable" to drive/put kms on them.

I personally hope manufacturers move away from limited production cars and sell as many as they can and only have them be limited due to natural sales. Two icons of modern motoring...the McLaren F1...106 produced and the Ferrari F40...1311 produced and these cars were never limited production...Ferrari and McLaren sold as many as they could. And that's the way it should be in my humble opinion of course.
