Answer to why M2 has no M mirrors, how it is with M buttons, etc

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
A member (F80 owner) of a German forum went to the Closed Room Presentation of the M4 GTS in Garching, Germany. The M2 was there, and he shared a few tidbits about it. I've shorten it to the most important points IMO.

1. M Performance accessories will be available right away from the launch of the car.

2. Why no M mirrors? He was told that since the M2's body is so different from the standard 2 Series, BMW decided to not give it special M mirrors.

3. The M buttons and customization like we know it from other M GmbH vehicles is not present in the M2. Instead, it is pre-set and you select various driving modes via the standard F-gen button near the shifter. Eco to Sport Plus, and Sport Plus is MDM. It also gives you the fastest DCT shifts.

4. Instrument cluster has orange illumination.

5. The car really sounds different to the M235i and a product manager told him that the M2 Performance exhaust will take it to another level.

Does it have an oil temp gauge?

If this is true, be set to be disappointed by M2 stock exhaust. The M235i M Performance exhaust is a step change but still nothing special on a M235i. The same M Performance upgrade for the M2 would be ridiculous.

Ugh, so in order to deactivate auto rev matching for the manual I'll have to drive at all times in reduced TC settings? That's quite preposterous.

In the US we had to live with the 135is having an arguably better sounding exhaust than the 1M.

Then I should laugh at you because my car does not have any driving modes.

Most likely not. In the official image, there's only a water temperature sign "OK." Maybe it will be like this: (2 Series Active Tourer)

Or get a tuner to fix it for you... In the end it is just a setting in the code

It is one of the digital readouts. No needle though.

Interesting questions and replies. Good that someone did that. I would have loved to go that event, but unfortunately it seemed really hard to get in there.

In the end, it is nice to hear these things that are now confirmed and we assumed before. On the subject of the exhaust, I heard that Akrapovic might be working on an exhaust for the M2, so there is hope. Else just fit a Hamann exhaust with down pipe and it sounds like racing car. Which means load enough

yup 1M stock was not inspiring at all but in this case, M2 is released after M235. For these 2 cars to use the same M Performance exhaust would be most disappointing. Akra would be god sent.

Why does the exhaust have to be super loud? I swear, sometimes on here I feel like I'm back in the late 90s. But now that you guys have more money, you're just doing the same thing to more expensive cars. In your hearts, this is still you...

I sure hope it's that easy. There was a thread on the f80 forums about a poster who lost backup sensor (or camera, don't remember which) function and rev matching function, apparently a sensor was disconnected from his transmission... that might be a possible route... I don't need some handicap to park.

I would think he meant to say the M2 M Performance Exhaust.

If it sounds nothing like the M4 exhaust it will be fine.

Ermahgerd! I needz moar spoilers! Moar loud! Mirrors mirrors mirrors.

I agree with you, people are missing the point of this car. I couldn't care less about the mirrors or the lack of CF bits or if the car is as loud as my old 408 powered Mustang.

I'm over all that stuff. And don't get me started on this new camber fad bullshit. Fuck my life.

I've been kinda feeling like the sound pumped into the cabin is good. I'm sick and tired of twits driving past my house at night with their "sick race exhuast" "because racecar" It's annoying at night. It's annoying during the day. Noise pollution is bad enough in every city in the developed world without people making their daily drivers louder.

Plus there's nothing more annoying to me on a long trip as a droning exhaust. I kinda miss my old stang, but the noise was ridiculous. I had to shut it off a few blocks from home and coast into the sub division so I would wake everyone up.

I'm not sure how much pumped in noise the M2 will get, but by the sounds of it on these forums, it should be loud enough on the outside, and it still sounds pretty decent.

Good info - thanks for sharing this! I'd actually be interested in all the details if you don't mind sharing more.

A couple questions for you that maybe you can help with...
  • Have they shared whether the M Performance coil over kit will come with progressive or linear springs?
  • Will there be the capability to adjust the settings for each of drive modes (Normal, Sport, etc.) in the iDrive settings menus?
  • Is there confirmation that the stock suspension is indeed passive (not adaptive as some have seen in marketing literature)?
Regarding your #5, as another poster noted already, I imagine you meant the M2 M Performance exhaust, right?

Thanks again!

Everything I see on car pages is something with no less than 7 degrees negative camber lol

I'm sure you would have heard the M235 MP exhaust. It is definitely not loud. Sound a rumble. 1M stock is the same. Hope M2 has a better character to its exhaust note

Oh, shit, yeah I meant the M2 M Performance exhaust for sure.

Asked him the questions just now and I'll post the answers here again once he replies.
