M2 transmission: do you prefer manual or M-DCT ?
The 1M, Cayman GT4, Boxster Spyder and Shelby GT350 have at least in common that they're manual only. And now also Alfa Romeo will offer a manual version for the Giulia (apart from an automatic).
Manual transmission as statement. For example Porsche marketing speaks about "make changing gear as emotional as it is perfect, for unfiltered driving enjoyment." BMW offers the M2 with either manual transmission or the optional double-clutch transmission (M-DCT Drivelogic). So what would you prefer for the M2: manual or DCT ? Cast your votes.

For me, it'll be a game-time decision. My heart is saying 6MT, but the DCT box in my current 135 can be addictive and I think it mates well with the N55. So, I'd say I'm 70% in the 6MT camp and 30% in club DCT.

6MT, although I certainly understand why people would want DCT (it is a brilliant transmission).
The transmission choice is about the only thing that is certain for me right now. Which car that's going to be in, who knows at this point.

I'll only buy M/T for a car of this type, especially as it will be a second car for me. Also I'll ask the stealer to remove the CDV before I pick it up, just like I did with my 1M. The CDV just removes another layer of interaction (or skill?) and the delay drives me nuts!

If i do buy the M2 i will be going for the DCT i believe. I even though i love the manual feel. As many has stated before Manual gearbox has reached its limit of what is possible for the car. While the DCT both takes of a couple 0.secs from 0-100 time then manual but the constant shifting in city enivorment can be a bit annoying. So DCT for me i think.
And i'm approaching the age where i kinda find the DCT more comfortable then Manual. |

It's a street car, it'll be more fun with an MT. I don't need it to shift that fast or violently on the road.

I agree. MT for me too. I will acknowledge that DCT is faster and better, but for my tastes as a street car I prefer the MT. I am also unsure about the long term ownership cost of the DCT. If I was better off financially to keep a DCT car well out of warranty I would likely give it a shot.

It's going to be my track beast. DCT is an unfair advantage.

MANUAL
Ive never had a proper dual clutch car before but i have test driven plenty. I must admit, the automatic rev match and upshift blurps can be intoxicating but i fear this novelty (DCT in general, not the sounds it makes) would wear off rather quickly and i would be left regretting/missing rowing my own gears. I think the M2 would be a awesome car in manual. If it were a daily driver in a high traffic city....i would be forced to really consider a DCT. I can relate to those who would fall into this camp. Manual can be fun, but DCT is also extremely satisfying. After driving the ZF8 for a year, I still miss the instant, zero torque loss gratification that comes with a DCT upshift. You don't get that from the ZF8 and certainly don't get it with a manual. Ripping through all seven gears with the engine whining like a really pissed off baby - I love it.

I will still have the best of both worlds, a MT in the 911 and a DCT in the M2.
The DCT is a must if the stop and go traffic that i put up with, not to mention it is faster than a human can shift. |

Lighten up. I'm referring to the fact that in the heat of competition on the track, having DCT is a huge advantage over those with a manual transmission.

There is no need for any proclamations about the death of the manual transmission.. We are now on the Fourth Generation of BMW automated manuals (SMG-1, SMG-2, SMG-3, DCT.... ) right... ? and it's just finally getting to goldilocks " just right " Porsche enthusiasts have also rejected the idea of PDK. only.. .... so let's be clear.. the fat lady hasn't sung yet. : if you like DCT.. go right ahead.. but don't try to push manual transmissions out the door.. One of the two is able to be repaired by the owner... the other.. not so much.. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 09-28-2015 at 03:11 PM.. |

However, looking at this small sample on this poll, there are still a few of us that want to save the manuals. Or they are just too cheap to tick that $2900 option (I'm both haha)

I agree.. I am also " too cheap" to click on an option box that costs me 3K more to buy it new.. ... and *also* costs 3K more when it breaks also! |
