I'd take a 1978 - 1981 M1 over pretty much any other M car. (In good-to-excellent condition, of course.)

I drove rental 228i convertible through California canyons and must say while it is not an M, 2 series short wheelbase is a huge advantage over M3 I drive daily. I really liked the 2: great size, great tranny. However the engine although powerful is a joke and so is the steering and don't forget the looks that are screaming I am a budget bimmer. Heavyness of the convertible was a plus in canyons in my humble opinion.
Anyway, if you don't care about looks and only drive 1 passenger, get the 2er, M or not. Or boxer/cayman which is more money....

Looks and sounds great, love the charcoal gray with blacked-out kidney grills.
I have to say the interior can use an upgrade to have it more like the M3 and M4 especially the front seats, to me that's where it's lacking. Otherwise it's cool. I've sat in one it's nice, it's just not the M4 regards to attention to detail. But I have not driven it and I'm sure it does the job superbly. |

But a moment of brilliance would have been a 390-400hp B58 motor or an already detuned s55. Why save it for the 100k M2cs unobtanium and with such a low limited production numbers BMW get thy head out of Arse! Case in point I'd still buy an M2 over any current coupe on the market. Just me.

I like the M2 for what it is - no frills, small, and fun. That's enough for some folks. |

My new favorite descriptor of an M2 car part. Did you know, the sun visors double as kitchen sponges?

"The all-new BMW M2's newly developed 3.0 liter 6-cylinder engine represents a symbiosis of exceptional output and outstanding efficiency. The lightweight, thermodynamically optimized, all-aluminum unit is extremely rigid due to its closed-deck design – which means that the cylinder water jacket is closed at the top. This enables higher cylinder pressures for improved power output and torque." "The crankshaft main bearing shells were adopted from the S55 engine. The crankshaft bearings are lead-free. A three-material S703C elactroplated bearing is used as a material combination for the lower bearing shells. For the upper bearing shells a two-material bearing made from aluminum R25 is used. The axial bearing is effected at the fourth bearing position." "The pistons were adopted from the S55 engine. Adaptations were necessary on the first piston, the plain rectangular compression ring had to be adapted as regards the material pairing to a liner made of grey cast iron. This is in contrast to the S55 engine where this is LDS-coated." "The oil supply was adapted for race circuit suitability: -Additional oil sump cover to restrict oil movements at high acceleration. -Additional suction pump to return the oil to the rear area of the oil sump during high lateral and longitudinal acceleration.; -Extraction from the exhaust turbocharger in the event of high lateral acceleration. With these changes, the oil supply can be guaranteed up to a longitudinal acceleration of 0.61g and 1.2g in the case of deceleration. Also with lateral acceleration, this structure enables a secure oil supply up to a constant 1.2g." "The oil sump is a common part from the S55 engine and is made of aluminum." "In order to adapt the oil supply to motor racing requirements, a second oil pump was installed as a backup." |

Great review. I went for the M240i and that was a personal choice over the M but he is so right these cars are so much FUN.. more fun that I ever had in my M6, M5 or even M3 (exception being CSL) and it reminds me of my first E36 M3...
