M2 vs. GT4RS
Not as much a true versus post as a "next step." Now that the GT4RS is essentially a confirmed product, I've spoken to my local Porsche dealership about getting info on their allocation and trying to get in line for a build as soon as I can.
According to them, they won't get info on their allocation until the announcement of the vehicle which is assumed to be Q3 2021. Is anyone else looking to move to the GT4RS from their M2? |

The car looks amazing but it's huge cash...$130k TO START....So I'd bet you're looking at $160k+ out the door with the way Porsche does options and the bearded hipster markup. Man that's a lot of cash for a Cayman!! Unless I was a huge track rat with many, many track days a year, I'd be looking into used 'supercars' at that level. Porsche prices are INSANE these days. I blame Chris Harris. Can't wait for the bubble to burst though

If it ends up being too expensive, I think it is almost certain that introduction of the RS softens GT4 prices. And that may ultimately be the more livable DD car. |

That'd be my guess, as well. Alongside the 992 GT3, these could push some more 981 GT4s and 991 GT3s onto the market. One of those could be a better play for the money IMO.

Used GT cars prices won't meaningfully come down, neither will enthusiast cars in general I suspect. Look at the prices of sorted S2000's, E46 M3's, E90 M3's etc. Demand for enthusiast cars far outstrips demand, just look at what's happening on bring a trailer. There are too many people with too much disposable wealth and a finite supply. It's only going to get worse as governments push electric on everyone. This is literally the golden age of cars, it will look very different in 10 years. If you want a specific car, buy it now if you can.
GT4 RS looks fantastic, but it's nearly double the price of a 981 GT4 so I don't see it affecting that market much beyond its current relatively shallow depreciation. |

I think it's also worth pointing out that Porsche Motorsport and BMW M serve different markets. GT cars are track-ready sports cars and the RS models take it even farther: the latter is essentially a self-towing track car. Both are substantially more aggressive out of the box than any factory spec M car I've ever owned or driven (I have not driven an M4 GTS); M cars are still fundamentally sport-luxury passenger cars. If you're looking for a like-meets-like Porsche-flavored upgrade path from an M2/M3/M4, what you actually want is a Carrera/Cayman GTS.
I'm curious to see if the GT4RS provides a compelling upgrade path for existing GT4 owners. Given the price delta, the relatively incremental performance improvements, and some of the other changes (more livable but less "raw"), the 718 is a tough sell for 981 owners...but the GT4RS might have enough in it to swing the needle. Then again, as above, different purposes. A PDK-only track weapon doesn't really appeal to me because my track habit is a pretty casual tertiary hobby; I do a handful of HPDEs per year plus occasional lunchtime power hour lapping. Would rather have the more streetable purist MT sports car and the regular GT4 already serves that purpose brilliantly.

I am definitely looking to get a Porsche GT car, but I think I'd just go the used market and go with a 991.1 GT3 or 981 GT4. I think GT4 RS is going to be way too expensive for a Cayman, and at that price, I'd rather just go with a 992 GT3.

Um...you're talking about a $60K car vs a $150K+ car. After options, there's like six figures between them. I don't think anyone is cross shopping these two cars. I mean, unless my salary doubles or triples, if then, hell yeah i'm shopping for a GT4RS. Might as well pick up a Cayenne GT as well.

Buddy got his 918 GT4 at MSRP, and now you can't find them anywhere less than 15k over. I'm sure there are, but be ready to make the many rounds of phone calls.

I have a GT4 and in line for a GT4RS, but it may be a very limited car (under 1000 units) and likely to command 50K over MSRP. |

The bigger issue is the downstream impact. With fewer cars, more people are ordering meaning the stuff like 911s, Caymans, Boxsters, Cayenne GTS/Turbo, Panamera GTS/Turbo S are rare to see as stock meaning if you're waiting for a car to come in and not spec, you're going to be waiting a long time. I think chips will catch up, but how will the above look? Producing less cars will constrain supply when demand continues to be through the roof.

I'd bet the biggest appeal for the niche group of GT# P people is that getting a new GT3 allocation is virtually impossible if you don't have a huge cashflow (or are someone who's been buying Porsches often so they make it into the dealer's legacy/personal allocation list). GT4s are probably quite a bit easier to get an allocation for, though I'm not sure the GT4RS will be. For that price point, I don't see why someone wouldn't just hunt for an older GT3.

I can tell the difference between a M2CS and a 718 GT4, and it's huge.
I do love de GT more and more, as its a total sportscar the CS never will be. Both cars great in their own. I have a confirmed pre-order/slot on a GT4RS Maybe a can compare them in a while, let's wait and see |

It depends on what you like driving. Some folks are firmly in the mid engine camp, and some others prefer the rear engine. I owned a Cayman and 911 at the same time and the feel of the two cars is not that similar when you press on. Get the weight moving around in the car and it's a different experience. I don't think I'd buy another Cayman. But I can also understand that someone who really wanted a Cayman may not be satisfied with a 911 of some kind since the cars drive differently. |

Too much neutering for the Spyder / GT4 variants...
