BMW Drops 2 Series Stick Shift

Posted this in the regular 2-series forum but figure it might hit you guys as well. Dark days ahead. Those of you with a manual M2, it may literally be the last great true drivers car BMW ever produces. xDrive Ms, no manual, etc.

I will cherish each and every day I have with my 6MT M2 like it is my last. Then the day it dies, I will part ways with BMW and buy a Porsche.

Real driving is a dying art. Convenience and automation are the future...a sad, sad future.

One thing that just occurred to me - unlike collector car insurance which is very reasonable now, fast forward 20 years imagine how much they'll charge to insure "owner operated" vehicles.

Damn...... should have gotten the MT on my M2... lol

How soon do they stop making the MT? I was somewhat foolishly considering trading in my MY17 for whatever the last gen M2 is in a MT so I could have the "best one"

No idea but would assume (you know what happens when we assume) that the current setup is safe but when the engine / trans changes that's when it happens. For the 240 I would say it's safe til 2019/2020 when the entirely new one comes out, but no idea on M2 when are they planning to swap the motor?

Wow. Talk about a slap in the face. The 3 series can't be far behind. Well, my MT should hold its value a little better now.

What the hell? 2,3,4 models are the only ones that make sense to keep 6mt. At least keep it as a damn factory option. I'd pay extra.

Been thinking the same thing - it seems inevitable. First, those of us who enjoy driving MT will be SOL then, at some point beyond, only the 1% will be able to afford to drive themselves at all.

Don't worry, when the dust settles at least everything will smell pretty.

This quoted from auto express review of new X3>

"As in the 5 Series, there’s ambient lighting with a choice of six colours, and among the options there’s a head-up display, acoustic glass for the front windows, climate control with the ability to pump out fragranced air of up to eight different scents, ventilated seats and a large panoramic sunroof that stretches back over the rear passengers."

Maybe not, if no one is allowed to drive it any longer in the brave new autonomous world.

Whats the obsession with manual transmissions?

It's interesting to see how different nations feel about such things.

I do agree that BMW may have made the wrong decision. Especially as a lot of US members seem to favour manual over semi-auto.
