F1 to ESPN

http://autoweek.com/article/formula-...pn-abc-tv-2018

This is awful imo. ESPN / ABC has the worst coverage and announcers for indycar races, minus Dr. Jerry Punch who they laid off anyway. Hopefully they bring some of the crew over from NBC sports.

Awful indeed. I hope they bring over the NBC crew and I sure as hell hope ESPN keeps their mouth shut in regards to politics. It's bad enough we can't hear the engines anymore, the last thing I want to hear is some ESPN SJW clown talking about diversity.

They never even mention F1 results all season on sportscenter. Now they want to broadcast races, lol.

ESPN is junk now, just a bunch of shows with people screaming at each other.

Great, I look forward to F1 races being preempted by the Timber Sports Log Chopping Championship.

And I seriously doubt ESPN will broadcast the races live. I’m thinking watching tape delayed f1 on ESPN sounds awful.

Possibly you were too busy to read the linked article: "All F1 races will air live in the United States on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC in 2018."

I reeeeeeally hope ESPN brings over some (if not all) NBC announcers. I liked all of them, especially Will Buxton's trackside reports. Also hope that ESPN has full event replays on their app like NBCSN does. I can't wake up in the early morning hours every race weekend.

The other news is that NBC didn't renew because they didn't want to compete against Liberty Media's coverage. Here's to hoping that we get a dedicated F1 app without commercials and horrible coverage.

Remember, when NBC took over from Speed, they were able to bring everyone along except for Bob Varsha. Unfortunately for me, a little bit of Leigh Diffey is way too much.
As far as Liberty's plans, it's possible the ESPN deal is just for the short term. Motorsport.com had this comment yesterday: "The announcement comes amid plans from Liberty Media to push for OTT (Over The Top) streaming in the near future, offering fans a direct-to-consumer service akin to Netflix or Amazon Video."

I'm ok with it, only because of the simply fact that I actually get ESPN. So I'm looking at it from the standpoint of ESPN F1 is better than no F1.

Concur!

Hopefully, short term is the case. I assume 2021 is the target for direct-to-consumer service.

I was wondering what they will do with commercials. I can live with a split screen during commercials, but really can't stand how some networks in some countries interrupt a race completely for commercials.

Been an F1 fan for decades, and watched as it's entertainment value has spiraled down to where the races are essentially a parade. The new owners are trying, wider cars & tires are certainly faster, but frankly at this point I don't care if ESPN gets the broadcast rights.

Fortunately for us in Canada, we get the live sky sports feed and it's pretty awesome. Not to mention the 1 hour pre race edition.

Sky's F1 coverage is awesome. I'm watching the Japanese GP practice 2 at the moment

You'll probably enjoy listening to crap like this. Then again, it has to be more exciting than Hamilton winning again, and again, and again.

Unless that guy is one of the commentators for F1 coverage, who cares?

Damn. I have really enjoyed the whole NBC commentator crew, especially some of the technical insight (and speculation) from Steve Matchett. I have been unhappy with the commercials from time to time but still pleased overall.
