I'm surprised they are going to an all new engine. Can anyone explain what exactly is better about the newer engine vs the old? I would think the same power boost could have been achieved very easily with the old engine via a simple boost increase.

I want to say that I read somewhere that the N55 will no longer be compliant with emissions standards, or something to that effect. Combined with the fact that the S55 probably costs less to produce now than when it was introduced, and that the M3/4 will be transitioning to a new motor, so there won't be a risk of cannibalizing sales...all of these things contribute to the decision.
From a performance point of view, you're getting a true ///M motor, with a closed deck, two turbos instead of one, and a hell of a lot higher tuning headroom (if you're into that kind of thing). You also get a motor that makes power to redline, as opposed to the N55 which drops off a cliff after 4500-5000rpm, where the single turbo runs out of steam. As a complete package, the current M2 is really well balanced, but the S55 will make it an animal. |

The N55 has better sound and less turbolag. The S55 has a little more top end power and much more aftermarket tuning potential. In stock tune the two are roughly comparable overall (each has different pros and cons but in end there's not much overall difference), however with aftermarket upgrades the S55 can provide much more power and therefore may be considered to be the motor with more potential. Sound about right? |

The N55 sounds better. This is it. Everything else goes to the S55: response/lag, power in stock form, cooling, aftermarket. I think anyone who says different is in denial. Wait until you see the difference it will make in the M2...

Having both; N55 does sound much better. Especially, on what I would call overrun. S55 is a beast of an engine in the performance department and will make the M2 feel like a rocket-ship (honestly more power than needed for a DD). I am curious to hear the sound on the M2 platform. Current M2 is a great machine, IMO, but excited to get some news on the CP.

Having owned an M2 and M3 I can tell you that it is, in those packages. A lot of that has to do with the cooling capabilities as well though, not necessarily the engine itself.

I have heard some people say the N55 has less turbo lag, and some people say the S55 has les turbo lag. So I would just split the difference and say they are probably pretty close when it comes to any turbo lag? |

You should try the S55 in Sport+, it has some anti lag features through wastegate management (and fuel?) - that should settle the argument.

@dragoon if you want this car, you might want to cast a wider net. All you folks in California and Florida that think you're gonna be able to run down to your local dealer ... fughedaboutit .... .. even if you were lucky enough to do so with a regular M2 |

I'd say the sentiment is pretty accurate. N55 absolutely out of breath in high rpm. S55 pulls almost like NA at the top.

The "M2 Competition" model name has vanished from all VIN sheets. So, "M2 Competition", "M2 CS" or "M2 Cs" ? (source: public BMW VIN decoder)

Check out the other stickied threads, it was mentioned that it has since been changed back to “competition”.

It is definitely not "Cs". BMW doesn't use lowercase letters in the VIN decoder. Lower case letters only appear in the non-German option code descriptions. The site simply converts uppercased strings to titlecased version.
I don't know where those guys are getting the M2 CS name, but I checked 3 different VIN decoders (official, straight from BMW) and all of them show M2 COMPETITION. Either they are caching the old name or they are playing a prank. Model names in the VIN decoder is not set in stone. If you decode M3 CRT, it will decode as M3 GT, if you decode 135i it will decode as 135IS. Back in November 2016, M2 COMPETITION was decoding as M2 CS, but what they are going to sell it as is anyone's guess. |

And if they've upped the kit considerably, it's worth going the out of state route.
