This is a very fun, transformer looking car for $34K. I would look great in this car 20 years ago - A high school teenager wearing baseball cap backward. Unfortunately most teenagers wouldn't be able to afford this car. I was test driving a white Type R a few months ago and it got so much attention from drivers around me, and it made me very uncomfortable. I don't mind getting lots of attention in a Ferrari but not in a Boy Racer Civic. Thank god I didn't buy it due to $10K ADM.

It's interesting that the reports and warranty claims for Civic Type Rs overheating (over 250º!) have started for cars that have hit the track. First the Z06, then the Shelby GT 350 and now the CTR. Maybe "track-ready" is beyond the scope of what manufacturers of streetable vehicles that have to meet all the U.S. emissions and safety laws can handle.

I've put the "m-lite" F22 through its paces on a very hot day at altitude, and never an issue in regard to heat. Same day, C7 Z07 was overheating, as well as a Focus RS, Cadillac CTS-V and a Camaro.. I can say I've never heard of many German cars that struggle that bad with heat (especially '15 and newer), and they're not even "track" minded vehicles, just performance oriented. I constantly try to consider that the cars we have come with aux oil coolers, etc, but you'd think the ladder would have caught up, by now? They all seem to advertise "upgraded cooling systems". Guess not..

I am surprised I have seen 0 of these in the wild. Only sitting at dealer. I see far more focus rs compared to this around.

Markup? I saw a blue one at a local Honda dealer. In the showroom, big sticker on the windshield: Not For Sale. WTF? They explained it's because it's so rare & exclusive that they want to keep one in the showroom so everyone gets a chance to see it... then will sell it well above MSRP.
Uh huh... good luck with that. I offered $20k cash. No? OK...

What did you expect, that's a low ball offer, even if its cash.

Uh, that was sarcasm. Have zero interest in a boy-racer civic. Especially not at inflated prices.

So is this car selling for MSRP now and is it true this is faster at the Nurburgring than the M2?

It's true but the car that ran that time was not stock as it had different tires, stripped interior, a roll cage and that's what Honda's fessed up to but I imagine it wasn't a stock tune because stock Type R's have been run around that track significantly slower. Manufacturer Nurburgring times by Japanese manufacturers especially are useless because they are rarely stock cars and they do it for press and the fanboys eat it up.

I started a thread (in this section) 2017 OG M2 vs 2018 Honda Type R. While I enjoy the looks and ride of my M2 more, I have total respect for the Type R. Here's an article from Road & Track.

Just a few dealers across the country are at MSRP. More dealers are now coming down to about $5k over and I was fortunate enough to find one at MSRP for my son. Look at the article which I included in the post above, and you'll see that it's a very fast car around a track.

From personal experience driving it, it's not just fast but fun to drive

We just picked up a Honda just recently, and my sales guy told me the 2018’s that they have, they can’t sell them with discounts.

This thing looks ridiculous and is priced higher than its market(high school kids). Not only that but theres markup.

non-starter...I would be embarrassed to show up to work in one.

I have a lot of respect for the Type R, and I briefly considered it before I decided on the M2. There were 2 deal breakers for me though:

1) looks
2) Front wheel drive. I wanted my fun car to have RWD, like race gods intended.

I was actually the first on the list for one, but I ended up passing on it.

First, I had "ordered" a white one, but they recieved a blue one (all my cars are white).

Secondly, I found too many non-functional parts and it drove me nuts...like grills without holes, blanks on the grill/bumper, blank buttons inside the car, and the FAKE carbon fiber aero parts.

Thirdly, was the 10-15k markup. This really annoyed me because when I put my deposit in with them, they didn't even know anything about this car and I told them that I would pay full MSRP with no markup. They were like yea, sure sure...no problem. Lesson learned, need to get stuff like that in writing.

Oh, and the wing is insanely obnoxious.

I've been a long time Honda fan and actually still own a '94 civic hb with a type r motor, but being 38 (40 now), I just felt like I needed a more "grown-up" car. (I have a '17 wrangler as my daily)

Given all those reasons above, I think I still may have pulled the trigger on it had it been in white. BUT, I'm so glad that it didn't as it turned my interest towards a BMW a few months later. I think of it as a blessing in disguise that my dealership got a blue one. Haha

Then more luck came my way...I put an order in for a '18 M2 ED...ended up cancelling the order because it was a lot of money (compared to the CTR) and after some research (new to BMW), I was quickly turned off by the fact that it did not have a "proper" M motor.

My CA luckily kept my name in the order because news of the competition model came out. I reached out to my CA again and he was able to change my order from the '18 to the '19 while keeping the ED...which later I found out that they would not do ED on this car for anyone else.

Happy ending...although, sometimes I wish I had gotten the DCT.

Drove friend's Type R today, in fact, it was only my 3rd time ever driving manual, he was nice enough to let me practice manual with it.

Compared to my M2, what I liked about it were the seats, the ride quality, and the versatility of it.

However, as much as a good value performance car it is, you definitely feel the Civic cheapness with the interior. The seats were the good part, but everything else in the interior screams cheap. And rear visibility is bad as a hatchback and the wing doesn't help at all.

Obviously, since I'm very new to manual and my M2 is DCT, can't really compare transmissions.

I had entertained the idea of saving money and trading in the M2 for the CTR because of the versatility and value, but after driving it and experiencing with the interior for a few hours, I'm happy with the M2. I appreciate the Type R and would still like to own one someday, but wouldn't give up the M2 for it. Don't mind the FWD at all, if anything, I love the engineering Honda put into it though, which is why I still want one, but just no longer to replace the M2.

I personally love the Civic Type R. They look ok in black. I think a wing delete on a black one would look subtle enough that I'd probably drive it. I wouldn't pay over sticker though.

Did you know the civic type R beats the M2 around nurburgring by 14 seconds. It also beats the M2 Competition around the nurburgring by 6 seconds. Wrap your head around that.

Hondas also have the best manual shifters behind Porsche. (in my humble opinion, and I even had a 1st gen R8 with the lamborghini gated manual in it)

It's fast. Dealers are ripping people off selling over cost. It's aggressively styled. The power numbers are fairly subtle in today's world, especially compared to M2 competition numbers. But don't let that fool you. It's fast around a track.

Civic Type R: 7:43.8
_____M2 comp: 7:50
__1st gen M2: 7:52
__________M4: 7:52

So it's faster than the current M4. Even the GTi clubsport. Crazy. Good job honda.

That time has never been reproduced and it is in fact slower than the OG M2 around every track in every magazine test that I have come across.
