The M Performance is not thicker than the original wheel.

I reckon the Alcantara is probably warmer to the touch than the standard leather.

Really? I thought I read somewhere it was thicker then the normal stock wheel.
Can someone that has done the swap confirm that it is not thicker. Maybe do a side by side photo of the two, I really thought it was thicker. Thanks in advance.

it is thicker. there are photos comparisons out there somewhere. it certainly feels a lot more substantial. the alcantara is very temperature neutral. so on very cold or hot days it is the same unlike leather. i was happy to give up heated steering in favor of the huge improvement in feel, aesthetics, and confidence.

Maybe there are thickness differences in the different variants. Mine is the full Alcantara with the LED display. Doesn?t feel thicker than the original.

Artemis posted a comparison earlier in this thread with a comparo pic, he states although not obvious in the picture the M wheel is chunkier around the Alcantara section.

This thread is not about the LED display wheel, it's about the M performance wheel that debuted when around the time when the M2 launched. The one you're talking about is much thinner you're right, about the same thickness as the stock wheel which is why I never considered buying it. The M performance wheel is not only thicker than the stock wheel, it's also shaped differently. I only wish it was smaller in diameter, other than that it's one of the best steering wheels I've held.

I wouldn't have changed the wheel if not for the lack of oil/water temp displays on the M2 otherwise, the original rims was just fine. Honestly, Alcantara doesn't seem to wear well.

Hi does anybody know where to find a user manual for the wheel with race display?
Even non-official is fine. Seems like there is no official user manual.

If you are purely worried about wear, taking care of alcantara isn't too hard. Just need to clean it once in a while and it goes back to almost brand new. Sonax has some good stuff to clean alcantara. Just an FYI if you were on the fence.

Just installed this wheel over the weekend, big fan cosmetically and its tactile feel. One thing I like is the groove behind the 3:00 and 9:00 location of the alcantara where your fingers can really dig in to.

Also, one question to owners, I'm pretty sure my lane assist motor is rubbing against my wheel trim as I can hear it when it triggers. It'll be a 10 min job to get back in there (after the 20 min wait after disconnecting the battery). Question is do you get much feel from the vibrations from this wheel? I know with the stock m wheel, I barely feel it compared to my wife's standard wheel in the X1 where it really vibrates.

Photo for bait!

Removed the airbag, removed the centre nut with 16mm socket wrench, pulled the wheel ( take note of the wheel position) its keyed and is easy to line up after wards. Stripped the switches, and placed them on the new wheel. Fitted the newly rebuild wheel, to the car and torqued the center nut to 46 lbs feet. Refitted the airbag, reconnected the battery job done.

If you have any queries please ask, i have done 2 previous steering wheel swaps on Audi's before doing the M Performance wheel.

Does anyone regret installing the M Performance Steering Wheel? Did anyone revert back to the standard wheel? Just curious.

I was on the fence for a couple of weeks and now can't live without it. Drove Mum's 430 the other day and it just doesn't feel the same. Too thin.

i can't imagine the drive without the upgraded wheel. the extra contours and girth and weight are incredible. the feel of the material is excellent.

Excellent. I'm shopping to order.

I plan to use the stock cover. Not buy the carbon fiber one. I can do that correct? I thought I read in one of the threads that I can re use it.

Partly being cheap. The other is it might be a little too much CF for me.

TIA

Correct, the CF one is the same as the stock one. You can use the stock cover with the M Performance wheel, and you can use the CF cover with the stock wheel.

I'm wondering about this as well.

While it feels nice and meaty. Is it leather or plastic on the wheel? It feels very plastic on install. I miss the nice leather on the M2 M wheel.

Is it leather on the performance wheel, and will it break in to be soft like the stock M wheel?

This M Performance wheel feels amazing in person. I would definitely pick one up today if it kept the heated steering wheel function.
