Damaged In Transport

So I got some wheel damage on the car while in transport. Has anyone else had this issue? What can I expect or what do I need to do to get it fixed. I notified my SA but I like to be up to speed on what needs to be done.

the damage is on the wheel on the bottom right next to the valve steam.

Id expect the dealership to point it out to me and expect a new wheel.

New wheel, no question about it IMO.

BMW of Murray were pretty good when I live in Utah (98-05), they were the only BMW dealer between Boise and Vegas then so they got all the BMW business.

I live in Provo and I get my white 2018 M2 next week, thats a complete shame. Like someone said, they should absolutely cover the damage.

New wheel, definitely don't agree to a refinishing of the damaged wheel.

^^ This.

The carrier has insurance and this is why. Sh*t happens. Don't feel bad like you are taking money out of someone's pocket if you don's accept them "fixing" the wheel. Nothing short of a new wheel for your new car will suffice.

Good luck!

Could it be a white marker? Sometimes they do that on new rims and tires.

Valid point.

First check if it ain't simply a marker line or glue from a sticker.

One of my front wheels was scuffed, and the best alloy wheel repair shop in the area (which has satisfactorily done work for me in the past) wouldn't touch this job because the clearcoat has a black tint and is "impossible to match." I got a new wheel instead, and you should too, since BMW's MSRP is $1,150 for a rear wheel and $1,050 for a front wheel. If you don't, you'll be mad every time you look at the car in the future.

BTW, one of my wheels had a white tire crayon mark on it; it wiped right off.

I experienced that as well

I had transportation damage too - scrapes on both passenger side wheels. Dealer replaced both. Though it delayed delivery by about a week....

Looks like you did European Delivery?

The wheel will get replaced. I would not worry much.

My wheel was damaged in Europe (by me) and BMW replaced the whole wheel at the port before it got to the dealer.

I?d expect this was done from the port to the dealer, otherwise the port would have replaced the wheel.

That's a really good point about the difficulty in properly matching the finish. All the more reason to demand a new wheel.

I inspected the scratch and it is a set of real deep circular shaped gouges. The dealer said he has to place a claim to the truck hauler but he thought they would just repair it. I would hope for a new wheel.

You are buying a new car, not a repaired new car.

Ask them to have the wheel replaced.

Absolutely don?t let them to that. It?s a new car, damage happened before delivery, they HAVE to put on a new wheel, no other way around it. Escalate it within BMW if that?s not the case, otherwise you?re getting screwed.

With gouges, the wheel has to be CNC-machined to correct the surface. How much material do you think they'll need to take off to make the gouges disappear? Plus there's the issue of refinishing to match. All of this, even if the result is perfect, will probably cost more than $500. I'm guessing BMW's cost on the wheels is around $700. There should be no question that you should be given a new wheel, if only to decrease the hassle factor for everyone involved. If they want to screw with you over a couple hundred bucks on a $55K car, refuse delivery.

The shipping company is insured, the dealer places a claim with them and replaces the wheel, not a big deal at all. Cars get inspected several times before they even make it to the dealer because every party that handles the car through the process is responsible so it is not a case where the dealer would "screw" anyone out of anything, its on the shipping company. Years ago I ordered a hood for my GTO and it arrived bent, I notified the shipping company and they gave me a full refund within 48 hours of the phone call and didn't even ask for the old hood back. This is part of the shipping business.

If you "hope" for a new wheel you will likely get a repair job. The dealer will make this right but YOU have to stand up for yourself and tell them what you expect of them. Be proactive, polite, but firm. If you say nothing in hopes of avoiding a challenging conversation you will lose. This is 100% in your hands to remedy. Take charge of the situation and get a new wheel, or leave it to chance. It's up to you and only you.
