GR Yaris v BMW M2 CS v Fiesta ST - Track Battle and 0-60mph 1/4 mile test
Posting this bc some guys on the CS forum thought it was ridiculous to compare the GR Yaris to the M2 CS, which obviously is ridiculous on some level but there are also similarities. Both seem to be a blast on the track and seem to go about it in different ways.
I'm sure we can live in a world where we appreciate both cars for what they are and how well they execute their intended function. https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a3...han-you-think/ |

I'd also point out the CS is on Sport Cup tires compared to the Yaris with its pilot sport 4s. that alone is at least 1 second of difference in the lap. Add on the fact the M2 was DCT compared to the manual in the Yaris, and the gap gets even narrower.
I also wish they sold the Yaris here. Adjustable awd and weighs 600 pounds less than the M2. would make a terrific daily.

I'm sure we can live in a world where we appreciate both cars for what they are and how well they execute their intended function. Trust me when I tell you if your a seasoned track driver the Yaris will get boring real fast on the track. Why? AWD cars are stupid easy to drive fast on track and require far less driver skill as you approach their limits. A well setup RWD car is ALWAYS a joy on track and much more difficult to squeeze everything out of it...As much as enjoyed my 450 WHP EVO X on track it was downright silly easy to do stupid things in it and get sway with them... It probably would make a great daily driver if it makes it to the states...

I would love to try one. Unlikely, but looks like fun regardless. All different cars, all good ways to have fun for their price classes. Anything can be cross-shopped for a specific buyer's needs.

So the rumor is "Corolla bodyshell + Yaris GR drivetrain" might make it to the U.S.
Which, if true would probably just make it a WRX competitor. Certainly a cool addition to the American market, but not something I'd really consider buying brand new unlike the Yaris version, with its lightweight bodyshell and tiny wheelbase. Last edited by Moflow; 04-16-2021 at 05:58 PM.. |

I think itll be the same for the Corolla/Yaris GR except for a handful of enthusiasts. On topic, this is a stupid test. The driver is not good enough to extract everything out of the cars. It is very easy to drive a 4WD car fast, especially vs a RWD car in less than ideal grip conditions (cold tramac + cup 2s). My Focus RS MK3 would regularly keep up and leave behind more serious machinery when it was pouring rain. Also this is a short and twisty track that nulifies some of the HP difference and increments the advantage of nimble cars. Take the trio to Spa for example and watch the M2CS be 5-10 sec faster. Not knocking the Yaris GR though, if I could afford it I would buy one as a daily/wife car.

The comparison between GR Yaris and M2 CS is valid. Both started out as basic rental spec entry level vehicles for their brand and then were modified in house to be top spec with some motorsport focused parts. The CS is still a 2 series with the same drive layout as any other RWD 2 series and the same body style as well, being 2 door coupe. The GR Yaris also has its own drive layout, with AWD. In that way, the CS is a lot more of marketing exercise than the GR Yaris is.

Eventually you'll come off of the vendetta against your own car and realize there are other things that weigh in on a car purchase other than outright performance. Like being able to hold an infant car seat in the back with an adult in front of it, hardly ever seeing other vehicles of the same model or maybe wanting a turbo inline 6 like the rb26 and 2jz you grew up watching.

I’ve had an infant seat in my 2014 Mustang GT, and my wife in the front. That’s actually how our kid got home from the hospital. Not having to see other cool cars just like your own is a feeling I’ve never experienced either. The 2jz thing I can understand. Tons of headroom on that motor. P.S. I sold the M2 last weekend. Camaro SS 1LE is next for me. Because race car I bought the M2 to experience BMW driving dynamics, and to get under 7:55 BTG Nurburgring Lap time. I’ve done both now. I appreciate how little I had to do to the M2 so I can daily it, and still be fast at the track. I chose the Camaro with the same philosophy in mind, but more outright speed, quicker laps, and less overall cost to own, maintain, and mod. In my book that is a Win - Win. Even if it’s uglier and less refined than the Bimmer. Which of course it is. Last edited by 5.M0NSTER; 05-04-2021 at 12:29 PM.. |

And to show I'm a man of my word, here is my new fun car.
Regrets? None.

Those Camaros are beasts . . . I love them. Good choice!
I was at Tremblant last week, and there was a GT3 and a 1LE in my run group. Both managed to lap me during one session -- though I am at the stage of life where I am happy to be "quick" instead of outright "fast". Regardless, I don't think I could hang with either for long! |

I'm in the "chasing lap times" stage of my life. I managed 7:52 BTG on the 'Ring in the M2 in April, with a 7:47 projected ideal. Now that I'm back in the States, the hunt for new personal bests is on. And I wanted a car which will have a extra capability I can still grow into as a driver. P.S. How do you like Tremblant? Do you happen to have some video? I haven't had a chance to visit yet.

July 13, 2022 is my next likely date there. You aren't "too far" away if you are in Michigan. It's worth the drive. So is Mosport. PM me if you want more details. |

Thanks! Just did my first, mostly wet track day yesterday. I like it so far. It's much like the M2; works well on track out of the box with just pads and fluid. That V8 is a torquey beast too!
