M2 just sold for 15k over MSRP

One of my buddy who worked at McKenna BMW just called me and told me they had a M2 in the show room today morning, someone offered 5k over MSRP, then another guy walked in and asked how much he has to pay to get the car today, he ended up paying 15K on top of MSRP...

What are the guys thinking? and why is the market still jammed up after so many months? why overpaying for a M2 instead of just going for a M4 or something, this seems crazy to me...

Also if the demands are so high, why don't BMW produce more M2?

Some guys have the money and don't care. They want it now and they buy it! Also BMW isn't over producing the M2 so they don't kill the 2 series sales.

Maybe he needed it immediately for use in a movie featuring the M2. No, I need it now! What's it going to take? Money is no object! Here take a thousand for yourself!

I was at my dealer yesterday going over the status of mine (in production!). To look it up he did a search on his system for all M2s in production for US deliveries. There was one unsold going to Hilton Head, SC and the remaining 88 were marked as sold. That one unsold car will probably sell for a pretty penny. Supply and demand.

Perhaps 10/15k over MSRP represents the true value of the M2 in NA.

I think BMW made a mistake letting you guys gave it so cheap

Yet forum members who post theirs for sale with only a couple thousand miles on them can't seem to get MSRP.

The BMW dealer in Hilton Head, SC is still probably trying to figure out why their phone is ringing off the hook

I dealt with Will at HH BMW when I was searching for mine. Typical lying bullshit treatment from them. Needless to say, never came to fruition with them despite being #1 on the list.

because generally people who are willing to spend that much over MSRP want the car to be new. Who knows what kind of peasant drove it before

I don't have much experience in this but does anyone know how an insurance company valuates a vehicle like this?

My guess is not all companies would be the same.

A typical policy will pay you "replacement cost" which includes depreciation. My brother had his brand new truck stolen after owning it less than a month. He did not even get what he paid for it because of the hit you take when you drive it off the lot. My guess is with a M2, regardless of what you paid for it, they would pay you MSRP less some small depreciation. Only a guess. And if you are willing to pay for, I'm sure you can get other levels of coverage.

An insurance company using a market driven Market analysis would actually factor in this sale price.

It's clear that the price of an M2 in -
Say- California is higher than most of the rest of the United States.

For an M2 owner with a car in this area then any market analysis would include the final selling price of this model at a dealer. That would of course be factored in with all other models sold in the immediate (25-50) mile area by private party and dealers. If cars in the area are selling at 15k over then the ACV (actual cash value ) of an M2 for that market area could indeed be 15k over msrp. Keep in mind that ACV is not what the paid for the car, and it's also not what the owners loan note May be.

I handled a total loss for the second Generation. ford GT- 2006 model - IIRC the msrp was 136k but the market value ended up being around 157k because they were harder to find in black as opposed to silver or red and even the color affected the value. The owner received more than the original purchase price of the vehicle because of the market price.

edit wikipedia-

A few other early cars sold for as much as a US$100,000 premium over the suggested retail price of $139,995 (Ford increased the MSRP to $149,995 on July 1, 2005). Optional equipment available included a McIntosh sound system, racing stripes, painted brake calipers, and forged alloy wheels adding $13,500 to the MSRP.
