The lyrics of their song may now change to "Hold your horses: it's getting an old engine + detuned. Say no more.".

This is for a specific variant called the CS which I am almost sure will cost 90 to 100K...

Maybe BMWs current residuals at 45-48% really are accurate. They knew they would kill the value when this thing is released.

For your entertainment, more news on BMW's dealer website. This dealer probably found out from some internal source officially.

http://www.bmwofasheville.com/blog/2...-the-works.htm

"This will replace the current N55 engine, which itself was just modified recently. A variant of the S55 engine is already available for the current BMW M3 and BMW M4. Being that the BMW M2 is smaller than its cousins, having an S55 engine is expected to translate to more torque, power, and responsiveness."

"Beyond the engine, the vehicle exterior is expected to undergo some changes as well. This includes the addition of a carbon roof and a one-piece carbon fiber propeller shaft."

Many are still waiting for the first MY's delivery but the discussion about its replacement already is on everybody's lips.

Does this ever happen to any other BMW, or any vehicles at all?

Let's see what actually gets announced before assuming current gen M2 value is going to plummet. People are still paying over MSRP for these cars and availability continues to be low...

I picked up my 17 M2 today and I do hope the M2CS will be release next summer since I'd probably trade in for one.

If the S55 really makes it to a mass production M2, then the early M235i adopters who then took a loss and waited in line for the N55 M2 really got screwed here.

BMW Marketing and the press continues to hype-up each iteration of the "baby BMW" as the next coming of Christ. Teasing with a quasi-M car and then an M-car with a non-S series engine, and now this...its just funny how for the longest time people bought into the idea of an N55 "with pistons from the M3/M4"...now we can all see that they were just kidding themselves...in really what they wanted from the get-go is an S55 M2.

An S55 M2, especially if released with the other boxes checked (mirrors, CF parts, etc.), would be the M2 that should have been released from the beginning.
The M235i is a 135i successor and the N55 M2 was a half-assed attempt that wouldn't have been signed off if BMW M was still autonomous from BMW AG.

I must say, if this is all true, then BMW is really laughing all the way to the bank while screwing a good amount of its enthusiast base.

If this car comes out it will be at least $10k more than the current M2. That being said, I could be very interested in one if it could be had like this:

You may be correct but I would counter that BMW has invested and spent r&d to develop the N55B30TO with pistons, bearings, internal oiling, ??+/- closed deck block casting, different turbo and cooling, etc. And all this for the engine to be used in only about 5-6000 vehicles? (if M2 N55 production ceases end of MY2017).

Further N55 development would be incremental at this point and an extension of info learned with N55B30TO development and probably cheaper than B58 based development, which is also certainly going on, but the B58 platform doesn't yet have many proven miles, unlike the N55, under its belt.

Anyway I will watch how this all turns out.

Hoooold the phone. BMW haven't even announced anything. You're saying something pretty harsh on nothing but rumor and speculation, and as of right now, that rumor is that the model will be an M2 CS, which you can bet is not going to sell for anywhere close to the MSRP of the base M2.

How about everybody wait for the official announcement, or at least some more solid rumors about what exactly we're looking at here before everyone jumps off a cliff over current model M2 values.

It's funny because everyone that stops me about my car is like OMFG, you love it right?!?! My reaction is "i like it" and they're surprised. It's a quick little car but it's not stupid fast. The M3 i test drove felt significantly faster. I will really regret getting this car over the 911 if this all comes to light next year.

Those are sunk costs. They are now looking at the return of future capital deployed and the return on just producing 1 motor (s55 and slightly detuned s55) and putting it in 2 cars is probably higher than producing a separate n55 and s55.

BMW won't lose money to support their early adopters resale value. That's the price we pay of being an early adapter.

You're partly right. I think BMW did want to check what the market for the 2 series M car was. Now that they know that there is a significant market and that other competitors are trying to exploit (AUDI TTRS and CLA AMG), they want to come out with a proper M car which would put them in place.

I have an M235i and came very close to selling it to get an M2. I am glad that there was a long queue for the M2 and also glad that Artemis kept alluding to an M2 CS(L) that made me keep my car and wait a little longer.

I am exchanging some messages on Linkedin with a couple of people (out of 6 people I tried reaching out to) who work for BMW and trying to get some information. I'll try to post the exchange once they respond and if they respond with anything interesting.

I got a feeling the M2's with the N55 engine would be the next must own/rare car in a few years.

Given what's been said the N55 isn't bad by any means. The car is easy to control and power delivery is smooth. S55 would probably make this thing the handful the M3/M4 is. So I would think this would be a detuned S55 or the M3/M4 gets a HP boost as standard.

Also the thought this could be the B55 under the hood.
