Want to buy best wheels for track use

Ok, so the title says it all. I want to buy a set of wheels that gives me the best and most efficient offset to utilize the as much rubber as I can fit to maximize grip. Originally I was in on an Apex group buy, but the wheels haven't come in yet and I'm having second thoughts.

The wheels I've been pondering are the BBS FI-R's, the HRE R101's, and possibly one of the Apex forged models. I have the M Performance coilovers so that needs to go into consideration. Camber is currently at -2.5f and -2.0r. That can be adjusted of course.

On the stock wheels I'm running the 255f/285r setup with RE-71's. I don't want to run any less tire than that.

I'm running Apex Sm wheels 18x10 ET33 all around wrapped in 275/35s. Works great for me.

Also on Bilstein coil overs with camber plates. Running a 12mm spacer up front to clear.

Thanks for the feedback!

I forgot to mention that I have an M2C so it has to be 19" wheels.

Do you have a specific tire progression in mind - or just planning on sticking with RE-71's? M2's can be a hard fit - particularly the comp with the 19s. If you know what tires you plan to run then you can see what sizes are available and work backwards from there.

Another option - if you plan to track a decent amount and think going BBK is in your future - maybe time them together and then go with 18" wheels. Can open up some more options for track tires.

More power to you dropping 10k on some FI-R/101lw. Personally I am going Apex forged. 275/30 19 295/30 19. Third the price and 3 lbs heavier per wheel. Can’t beat performance vs. cost.

If you're gonna be spending $10k+ on wheels, maybe get the carbon fiber ones on IND?

And then anytime you get a nick or scratch to your 10k wheels cry a little
bit inside.

My vote is Apex. Just ordered EC-7's for my M2C.

That's what some people said when I bought my M2 instead of a camry. I had my tear ducts medically sealed and all is well.

But, realistically, I agree. I don't see the point in getting expensive wheels for a car you're gonna beat on at the track for fun. But OP said he wanted the best of the best, so I linked the carbon ones.

All of the wheels I noted are between $6K and $8K which is at the TOP of my budget. I'd be more than cool with the Apex, but I've already waited several months on a group buy that may or may not deliver wheels soon. My hope is to haven new wheels before my next track event which is the weekend of 10/13.

I appreciate the link, but those are basically $12K which is a solid 50% more than even the HRE's shipped.

You have Apex forged now as an option. Maybe a blessings the flow formed ones took a while. But if you have the cash I don’t think you can go wrong with some FI-R / 101lw. I would just me more paranoid rocking wheels that expensive on track. Even on street for that matter. Imagine grinding one against a curb 😮🤦🏻*♂️

Well great news, the Apex wheels are about to ship and now, thankfully, I don't have to worry about expensive wheels on track. Now I just have to figure out if I can get 305/30 19 to fit in the rear.

Also look at the Titan7 forged TS7s, here's a fresh set installed on a Hockenheim M2C, wrapped in Yokohama AD08Rs:

I have seen 305 on Apex rears just don’t know the details. I think they were 18” wheels. I am trying to fit 275/30 19” up front.

Yes, they make a 305/30 19 RE-71. Will it fit? Not sure yet. I think I'm going to try that size rear with either a 265/35 or 255/35 front. The thing I'm worried about is the total diameter specs. I think the rear needs to be larger than the front to not make the car think there is traction loss. The 255 is 26", the 265 is 26.3", and the 305 is 26.2". I'm hoping to get some clarification on this before I pull the trigger on tires. I'm leaning toward the 255/305 setup.

Gonna have quite a bit of understeer with 255/305. That's something only mid rear engine cars can get away with.

I'm currently running a 255/285 setup with RE-71s. Do you think it will be more understeer than my current configuration?

The guy with 305 rear used 275 up front. You are going to be a snow plow with 255.

Yes, I believe so. Stock is 20mm wider in rear. Currently you're 30mm wider in rear. and 255/305 is 50mm wider than rear. That's quite a big change. I think accelerating out of corners is gonna push those front tires out of the way and you into the dirt. Of course I could be wrong. I'm being an armchair physicist here. Just sharing my thoughts.

Well poop. I don't want that. I'm roughly looking for the turn in and exit I have now with more traction on acceleration out of corners.

Do you drive with DSC on or off? What are the specs on the wheels you have inbound?
