Those pads are used for NVH. BMW must have wanted more sound from the bay so Didn't use it at all. It's not actually heat resistance it's used for.

When I added it to my 335 that dis not have it it made a huge temperature difference on the surface of the hood. But, that car does not have the huge space above it that the 2 series hood has, but it will keep some heat away from the surface. I never noticed any sound difference. I will probably add the insulator pad to my M2.
