If space becomes a real concern once the kids grow I've had a couple of 6 foot guys in the back of my 235 coupe. They bitched getting in and out but once settled were actuallly very comfortable.

I have both. There is no comparison. The depth of engineering in a 991 is soooo much deeper than an M2. It is superior in all aspects. But, I still enjoy my M2 for what it is at half the price. It's a very good car, just not as good as 991.

A 991.2 or GT4 are basically my dream cars. I have only had the chance of driving a 996 a couple times over 10 years ago but everything was just "right" with the car and it made quite an impression. I say keep the 911 and the R for now given your needs.
I just sold my R and have said it is not the most fun car but it is a very solid choice if you have multiple cars, not sure why everyone is saying sell it. Great if you need a AWD 4-door and it being a hatchback just adds to the utility. Also can be a very quick car, guys are spending a couple grand to do FBOs w/ JB4 & Flash tune stack and running 11s on the stock turbo (full interior and street tires). IMO that makes a great sleeper/DD.

I like the fact that you at least broke it out and qualified that question as stand alone its ridiculous. nobody chooses an M2 over a 911. if you can afford it 911 and the debate ends there. Its like asking if it makes a difference to fly first class over premium economy...

It's tough. I can remember walking into a dealership when I was about 12. There was an arctic silver metallic 911 on the floor. I've wanted one ever since. Fiance hates the look of every 911 I've shown her. She loves the look of Corvette.
After recently watching a video of a Corvette and 991 GTS on a short track. 0.3 difference in time, but 911 was so composed. The Vette seemed to be on the ragged edge the whole time. I was considering one until that video. Gotta love bench racing. |

In a vacuum, it's clear you should keep the 911. However, nobody lives in a vacuum and there are always other factors.
The 911 is a "better" car, but it may not be the best car for you, at this time in your life. But only you know what all the other variables are. |

Thanks for all your replies everyone.
Drove the 911 again today, and yes, you're all right, I'd be crazy to let that go. So thanks for all the comments, that's why these forums are so great, we can share opinions on something we're all so passionate about. I'll keep the R and the 911 and just be satisfied and happy with them, simple as that. |

From the other side..
I've always wanted a 911 and with a big bday coming up this year and enough cash in the bank to buy one, I was ready...
Until I got the M2. I freakin love this car. Yes, lots of little things bother the Sh.. out of me, but at the end of the day, I LOVE THIS CAR. Someone asked me the other day "you still going to get a 911?" and my answer was "not at this time". Now, granted, if I already had the 911, I seriously doubt I would unload it and pick up the M2 - but if you are in a M2, and are as happy as I am, I just don't see a reason to drop the cash on a 911.

911. Not even close. I had both. Unless you absolutely need usable back seats, then get a 1M.

Keep the 991.2. It's obviously almost new. The only reason would be to reduce costs. However, the new m2 may cost more in depreciation. If you bought the 991.2 new, you'd be crazy to sell it unless you like burning money, like I do! I traded my R for the m2, because I have an x3. A 911 is fine for hauling kids around. And I love my new M2, but it's no Porsche. But I wouldn't own a Porsche less than a turbo and for half the money, the M2 just has no substitute!

Drove my friends 2016 911 Cab S Sat night. Wow, what a machine.
Better than the M2? For sure. 3X better? No way 2X better? Not really so back to my original post - if you had the M2 already, I would not move up to the 911. But if you have the 911 I would not move down to the M2.

I am also between a 991 and an M2. I have my M2 week 33 allocation so it's pretty close to the finish line but, I wanted a 911 since I first saw it when I was 10 years old. Since my wife informed me no more cars for several more years, I am thinking of getting the 991.
The from what I've read, 95% of people say go with the P-car. But, do I want to forego a pretty hard to get car that is going to be brand new from the factory to get a car that is 2-5 years old?

Sold my 997.2 and bought the M2....haven't regretted it one bit. Loved the 911 for many reasons and may own one again someday. Something about the M2 I just enjoy more at this point in my life

Having owned both, what are your thoughts on the 991.1 C2S vs the M2? I am looking at a 2014 C2S with the sport chrono, pdk ,etc, etc...

I find the 911 in general to be a car that belongs in its own catagory altogether. From the timeless design, to the rear engine, down to the smell of the interior (911 owners will know what I mean) Something about it is just special. You will never hear me knocking 911's (even the wrongly hated 996) ever. Great handling, performance, comfort, and looks (subjective) all in one package. The ones I've owned were never the fastest but just came about as close to perfection out of the box as I could have asked for. Is is a good daily driver? It was for me for 10 years in my SC while the 997 was used mainly as a secondary vehicle. All this said, why the hell would I sell a 911 and buy the M2? Simple answer: I'm an automotive whore. With so many choices out there I like the chance to enjoy every one I can. I have a long history with BMW, first car was a 2002, and have owned a few other M cars before (E36/E46/F80) Loved them all but started to lose a bit of faith with the F80. Just my opinion but the car just felt too big for my liking....then I saw the M2 and knew I had to try one. Got a chance to drive a demo in early 2016 and put my name on the list for one. When one finally came up recently I figured I'd give it a try and luckily had a buddy who wanted to buy my 997. Do I miss the 911? Absolutely. Do I regret selling it to buy the M2? Not one bit. Either way you choose you will not go wrong Last edited by Transcon; 07-21-2017 at 04:47 PM.. |

Someone that owned both cars said the following a couple of days ago:
"The difference between driving a 911 and a M2 is that while driving the former, no one ever jumped in front of me, gesturing and asking me to accelerate" Interesting, in fact. Totally understandable given the soundtrack difference between them |

Friend please never ever get out of a 911 (also my dream car, was on my 2nd one at the time) for an M2 and expect that you'll be satisfied because it's "85% of the performance for half the price" or "all the car you really need" or similar. There's a lot of hype in the auto journalism/internet of this nature out there about the 2 platform.
I stupidly did exactly this a few years back (granted it was for the 235i, but not too far off from this scenario) because of rationalizations like these, and literally on the way home from the dealership after delivery of the 2 series, my heart sank and I knew I messed up in a big way. I got eaten alive by the depreciation on that car, but got out of it as soon as I could anyway. (Thought I'd try the F82 a year and a half later for all those 'practicality' reasons. Same disappointed feeling but I resigned to keep it; it was stolen on day 3 of ownership. So, back for good into P-cars.) On the 911 boards, the answer would be "Why not both ?" But this is a BMW/M2 board so you'll get some guys telling you that the 'M2 ticks more boxes including practicality', that the 'non-GT 911 models aren't real sports cars anyway' (lol) and such things; these are copes. If your dream car is a 911, then a 3500lb+ car derived from a sedan will always disappoint you, especially after a switch like you're considering. Don't do it.

I don't think you have been on here too long have you Because the one thing you will notice about this "BMW/M2" board is that just about everyone has total respect for the P car. In fact read this thread where almost everyone says keep the 911 and if someone here had the guts/nerve to say that any of the current 911 models aren't real sports cars anyway, I think they would be crushed

Price gap worth it? Buying slight used vs brand new? Image, I don't want to come of as the d-bag driving the p-car. But, I have always wanted one and I think the 991 is the best looking one since the 993 (with the exception of the 997 turbo which is ruled out for, wait for it.... being too fast to enjoy). The timing isn't perfect to get one but I don't think it'll get any better once kids are in the mix.
