Not sure if most dealers/service will just fix it if you ask or if they have to hear it themselves. I have a feeling if I keep complaining a tech will "hear it" and they will fix it.

I'm so mad right now thinking about this actually......... Why do I feel like this is going to take hours and days of pestering them when they could just cut straight to them fixing a problem that sounds like the car is dragging its exhaust on the ground? They say they want to save money so their policy is the tech has to hear it happen, but what about the money they lose when future potential customers hear the sound and BMW being stubborn about fixing a problem? It's just nonsense!
Called my SA with the info in the above post who called me back within a day to say they had ordered parts. He said bearings need to be replaced as part of fix?

Well that's interesting. Did he give you any further explanation? Please dig into this with the SA or the tech when you take the car in. I think a lot of us who feel some, but not all, of these noises are related to rocks in the dust shield would love to know more.

Agreed. I had my dealer swap the brake shields last week but there was no mention of bearings in the PuMA.

I believe the wheel hub needs to be removed in order to replace the protection plate. The bearings can get damaged during removal of the hub.

Just bend the stock shields slightly. Problem solved!

I would bend the bottom and if that did not solve the issue only then would have them replaced. What is not understood is where the rocks are getting in. Looking at the new protection plates I don't see much of a design difference.

I'd put $$$ that the lip on the rear protection plate is the primary culprit. It goes around the entire rotor and seems to be overkill. My guess is to prevent rocks from getting in between the calipers/pads. Even so, seems if the bottom had a cutout any rock/s would quickly fall out. The front protection plate doesn't have a lip and also doesn't seem to have this issue.

I used to get rock noises every day. Then I bent my shields, and I haven't had a noise since. I suspect you might not have bent them enough...

Just went to my dealer today and they said that my car MY17 has already the new parts. So does this only affect MY16? Granted, I hear the soda crunch noise from time to time but it goes away.

I have a MY2017 and have heard the crunch over 20 times since I took delivery in October. I don't believe this ANNOYING DEFECT is limited to MY2016.

I haven't been driving mine much lately but will likely take the information from this thread to the dealer and ask them to replace the shields.

Just an update. Since I had the new shields installed, I have not heard the crunch or screeching sound. So the shields replacement was a success. Hope you all have similar experience.

I had these fitted to my October MY17 the other week & done about 500 miles without the noise; this was after making a point of driving though gravel and down crappy country lanes thank you to the OP for sharing the love on this!

So got my baby back with the new shields installed. Attached are pics of the old/new shields together with the workorder outlining the problem, solution, and part numbers.

Hope you all can approach your service advisor with the info and get the problem rectified.

Successful or not, be sure to share your experience here for all.

I have a MY17 car - is there anyway (without actually removing the part), I can tell if I have the new revised part on my car as mentioned in the thread?

If you've never heard the noise you probably have the revised part.

I heard the noise for the first time a few days ago in about 8000km of driving in a MY17.

Did you buy used? If so call the dealer where it was serviced. They should be able to look up whether it was replaced.
