Some back of the napkin math...he drove 111K/yr, 9K/mo, driving cross country at ~3K he made 3 trips/mo. If we assume he loaded unloaded each at end of the trip then he opened and closed the tailgate ~648 times, Is that a lot for a 9 year old truck?

Surprised he didn't need new shocks or something.

Oh, those shocks were toast if original, you can get away without replacing, but obviously it will cause handling and tire wear issues.
