As an option of course, not standard. Just like DCT/MT. Not all of us are drifting hooligans.

They did that with the M235i and still call it N55!

That's the beauty of turbo engines - you can cannibalize them whichever way that fits the purpose.

I'll have to see it to believe it.

Mercedes has a 2L 360 PS in their entry level AMG (A, CLA). Audi/VW is currently working on a 400 PS 2L for their entry level RS models to replace the previous 5-cylinder engine. (RS3, TT-RS, Golf R 400)

2L shaves off a lot of weight, compared to 3L.
If in 2 years BMW will shove a N55 in their M entry level model, hmm... In 2016, this motor will be 7 years old, and emission regulations are not getting easier.

And why is everyone buzzing? I recall not so long ago the forums were talking V6 for the new M3. You don't know what's coming until BMW confirms it.

I refuse to believe that bmw can build a reliable high strung turbo 4 cylinder motor. The N55 with 300 hp is relatively reliable but that is an extra 2 cylinders, 80 less hp and 1L extra displacement. Wait till those cla motors start crapping out after everyone drives them like real performance cars. Make no mistake about it, a reliable higher power 4 banger can be built, I just dont thing Bmw or Benz can do it.

Great news, but N55?
I think the M2 would be a great platform for the N55 successor, with 390 bhp at least.

Much too close to M3.

M3/M4 to M5/M6 is 130 PS difference. (430 to 560)

So M2 that has only 40 PS less than M4 = bad marketing for M4...

but that will only add weight, and based on other platforms, not give enough room for adequate stance of the car. sort of defeats the purpose of an M car no?

I thought that was what I had read - makes sense on the bigger HP cars - not sure it would make sense in the 2,3, or 4 Ms.

i actually want to be able to turn instead of having tires screeching because it can't LOL. then you can rotate the car with throttle...

maybe awd but something like 20% to the front only? but id rather not have all that weight.

Would have preferred a detuned S55 but I'll take the n55. Seems like this will be the only single turbo M car BMW sells though.

Here's hoping we have some decent aftermarket turbo options so we can upgrade from day 1.

Single turbo models have better throttle response.

That was the one thing I would've changed on 1 M

I'm excited to see how this turns out. I'm afraid how big the M4 is. M2 may be a better fit for me.
The 'middle child' kind of placement you're referring to is right, but I also chose the 335is because IMO the I6 TT was much better and more fun than the crappy V8 in the M3. In this case however, both cars use the N55. One simply has more power, and the kind of person who would even buy an M235i over a 228i (Think more power, sportier) I think will opt for the M2 as well (As long as the money is there)

God I can't wait for this thing. Glad I haven't placed order yet on an M235i. Now I know not to do a 3 year lease. Either buy M235i and trade in 2 years later or just wait it out.

Pretty tough to call the S65 crappy.

It's a great engine - just very different than an I6.

The 235 is a great car but a let down if you come from 1M. Really excited about M2! I estimate 350 hp in final form but I dread that they will bloat it like 235i. I don't want tv display nor I drive nor 10 lbs of badges. Come on BMW! Get it right!

I wonder how different the motor will be from the M3/M4, will the production runs be generous, and of course pricing.

A turbo straight 6 was a guarantee, as the M235i has a straight 6 as well. BMW chopped two cylinders off of the E30 M3's motor because that car was designed for homologated racing. This isn't.

I'm sure this motor will have stronger moving bits than the N55 in past cars. I'm not worried about "tunability"

I am worried about power delivery. The N series motors are far less fit for track duty than the S. BMW, it seems, has gone to some lengths to improve high-RPM operation on the S55. I would hope they do the same on this engine. However, if that was a design goal, I don't see why they wouldn't just stick a retuned S55 in the car. It would have been a much cheaper way to make 375hp and a proper torque curve.

I'm excited for the chassis of the M2 but, I'll hold my elation for the motor until it's properly dyno'ed. I'm not confident it's going to deliver power in a way that an M car should.

M235 was to replace the 135is and not the 1M...to be fair
