Monitoring Engine Vitals on iDrive Display

I am sharing this info out confirming I was able to code under Expert Mode the screen sharing for Android. I use iPhone's but have always had an Android around to use Torque which displays lots of info needed.

This will help on track days.

Searching around I found the following list of parameters which I coded in Expert Mode using the BimmerCode APP. Thanks to Almaretto and Gabrola

I coded all these parameters to be aktiv and now my iDrive menu is showing the Screen Mirroring option.

Had trouble initially connecting the phone but it was because its an older Android, tried with Galaxy S6 and S5 and it works.

Did mine using Bimmercode app.. It wasn't all straightforward to find but in expert mode under the display module I just typed in the parameters and the Bimmercode app narrows them down for you, then set them to aktiv.

That's killer. Can you still run background apps like BMW Laptimer while this is active? If so, do you have more detailed instructions for some of us newbies?

Thanks!

I just did this yesterday and tested more this morning so more testing on other apps needs to be done and I can report out.

I dont use M Laptimer since I actually have the Performance Analyser but that uses an OBD2 dongle so I cant use them together.

I have been in contact with the Performance Analyser developers to suggest letting the app display many of these parameters together this way I dont have to resort to this solution and still be able to record my runs.

I understand Torque allows recording vid also so I will try it.

I do believe you can still run apps in the background, I will confirm by running Music apps while mirroring this and see if the audio still runs thru the cars speakers.

Great job...just download the MLaptimer app and try to run it through the screen...you will free up the OBD2. I do run the Laptimer on track while my iPhone displays info from the ELM OBN scanner to my FourStroke app.

Will do that! If this turns out to give me all I need I will sell the Performance Analyser then.

I found a thread on the e90 forums about custom Torque PIDs and someone put ont together for a 335. Need to read more about using those customs PIDs.

OP,

Good work.

For a JB4 user controlling Jb4 via BT on android JB4 app, would screen share work so JB4 app display - see below - shows on idrive ??

I understand it will. Basically anything you see on your Android screen you would replicate on the iDrive screen so the JB4 app would be seen on iDrive.

Does M laptimer show oil/water temps? I use AIM solo for timing but I wouldn't mind keeping M laptimer up if it shows this critical info.

Not sure about the Laptimer but the Performance Analyser does. But it doesn't display it as multi gauges. You can have them data logging during the runs.

When you are searching for the Parameters in Bimmercode under expert mode the app provides you an area at the top where you can type the parameters in for ease of finding them. Pretty similar to the search ESYS provided.

Correct, my current cel is an iPhone but Torque Pro doesn't support iPhone and the BMW screen mirroring only supports Android.

I figure if this works as I expect during track days, I might jump back to the Android world again.

Never been locked on any of them have moved from iPhone/Android couple times.

......but....... You need an iPhone to use Bimmercode and enable screen mirroring, right?

Is there any specific reason why screen sharing doesn't work with iOS? Is it just software compatibility? Four Stroke seems similar to Torque

Apple BS most likely..

Probably same reasons why you can't screen mirroring from iOS devices to TV's directly without an Apple TV

Completely different technologies at play here. Android stuff is using Miracast. Apple does their own thing. Technically, CarPlay is their own form of screencasting - the car's display behaves like a "second display" to iOS (when you take a screenshot on the phone, you'll also get a screenshot of the CarPlay screen).

You could also code the options into the car using a laptop + ESYS + appropriate coding cable, you wouldn't need an iPhone/iPad for that. Bimmercode is just an alternative (easier to use) than ESYS.

This wont work on my car!

I followed the steps, the Screen Mirroring option is present, and I can connect to the car with my phone, but as soon as I choose the Screen Mirroring option from the Media section of the iDrive, it asks me to Add a Device!

Device has already been added, so I dont know why this is happening. Anyone have a clue?

have you turned on smart-view on your android device yet to link up to the car?

bottom right icon is what it looks like from the drop down on most android phones:
