FWD has tons of advantages. Cheaper to make, lighter, fewer parts, better fuel economy, better interior packaging. It's why so many other cars are FWD.
Disadvantage: shitty driving dynamics

Funny, my GTI has comically better driving dynamics than our LCI F30. It even has a mechanical limited slip, weighs 400 pounds less, has something weird called steering feedback and gets better mileage.

Just simply being rwd doesn't magically make a car special, something BMW seems to have completely forgotten with the entire, awful F Series. Hopefully the G gets closer to their roots, but I'm not holding my breath.

I wouldn't call all F series cars awful. My RWD F82 M4 is pretty Badass. Just saying.

Comparing the F30 - which might be a base model - to a GTI might not be the best comparison of apples and apples - Their goals are completely different! Just saying...

Of course. M has seemingly found ways to fix a lot of the shortcomings of the F30. And the M2 is also great.

I will concede that the F3x cars should have been better. Hell the 1st time I drove one (years back) I couldn't believe how shitty the steering was with the change from Hydraulic. At that time I said fuck that and bought an e92 335is just so I could continue to drive a " real" BMW.

BMW has become the German Toyota

This is further proof. They want to bring a FWD car made in China to the US. That's Laughable and sad.

Not true.
B48 is a brand new engine, designed for the entire BMW line. It is not anything like N20 (aka prince engine).

If BMW does bring the sedan to this side of the pond, unfortunately, they are going to sell a metric crap load of them.

Mainly because of the Blue and White Roundel and not the wings...

I've had two minis in my life, 2006 and a 2011. Still to this day a vast majority of Americans have no idea Mini is owned by BMW.

It's all about the brand, nobody cares what they can get and for what. If it has a German badge they feel rich.

I've been to a few Cars and Coffees, the cockiness of the guys (and gals) driving the CLA is astonishing.
I seen this quote and started rolling. You not lying. It's as if there in a CL/CLS/S.

Their car mannerisms says it all.

Gotta tell them to relay, you just got in the room.

My folks have a 2014 Countryman S - they're not even looking at other cars when the lease is up, they're just getting another one because they love it so much.

And we've had ~10 BMWs in the family. I really like the Mini - it's a hoot to drive.

One reason would be because you can't get a MINI with anywhere near 300hp, while the 1 Series will soon be available in such a configuration with standard AWD.

Because it allows them to produce the product with margins similar to the competition (Mercedes CLA and Audi A3). Furthermore, they have market intelligence that tells them that the the target demographic does not care if it has FWD (again, see the competing A3 and CLA).

Hmm - Autonews disappoints then. They are typically one of the more trustworthy sites. They even get people to pay for access to some of their content, IIRC.

So any new whispers on a possible sub-3-Series four-door passenger car in the US?

I think he meant a 2 Series sedan that shares a platform with the coupe and convertible which will remain RWD for the coming generation while the 1 upcoming F40 1 Series hatchback will join the sedan on the FWD UKL platform.

Two-thirds true.. Mini also uses B48. The interiors are of course entirely different.

Standard awd? They said the same about US X1s and yet we have fwd ones now. I'd bet the 1 will offer fwd just to keep the price down.

He's referring to the F40 M135i which will most likely be xDrive only.

In all seriousness, a small, AWD sedan with ~300 BHP could be very interesting. Especially if it were to have a proper suspension, a tuned chassis, big brakes...wait, think we've all dreamed of this before.

Odds of an M Performance model having a manual? I wanted to like the S3 and RS3, but couldn't warm to the DSG.

That's a good question on the manual - my guess is that whatever dealers are stocking will be 100% ZF or whatever it's supposed to get, but perhaps there will be the standard ordering option for a manual?

Whether or not that's even available might be a sign of things to come on that front...

The Mini styling certainly is certainly polarizing - I think the fact that it IS very different is one of the main attractions to those who do like it. Quirky and different can be a really important selling point, especially when such a dedicated group of people love it.

But I get what you're saying...
