Dealer telling the truth?

I placed an order a couple months ago at a dealer that claimed to have an allocation for a 2018 M2. They provided a pdf that had a production number and an order status of 111. I had initially thought this was W36 from the document.

I recently called the Genius line to get my build week, but they didn't have the production number in the system. They recommended talking to the dealer.

The dealer said this is expected since the production number isn't in the system. They also claimed that my allocation didn't have a build week since they don't have build weeks for allocations in the past couple months due to the year model switch.

Is this situation possible?

I'll call the Genius line again tomorrow to see if they consider this possible...

That has not been my experience... every time I've gotten a production number I've been able to look it up using the 1-800- number/genius.

The Genius line should have the status information from the dealer within a day. If the production number is not in the system then you don't have a production number since they get it from the system. There are dozens of examples on this forum where people, myself included, have a build week for MY18. Now, if you have a status 111 or even 112, your build week is subject to change. BUT, you should still have a build week if you are status 111.

My CA didn't confirm my allocation until I was status 111 with a build week. It's been 2 months, your CA should be able to provide you with your build sheet with the production status and build week indicated on the top of the form. If they can't, maybe call some other dealers for an allocation just in case.

What is your build?

Yup, that would be a lie for sure. Prod # is avail when an order is entered and given an allocation.

Agreed - sounds like bs. Should have a build week attached to it, even if the build week is still subject to change. And the number comes FROM the system.

My build was LBB, manual, and exec.

Yea... I was thinking that it was BS.

No production number no allocation. Dealers do enter orders into the system and they call them orders but until it is matched with an allocation it is just a request. They generally refer that as the order bank. The BMW Genius line won't have any information on order bank requests.

Not everything works as smoothly as you would hope. Until the car is delivered and the keys are handed to you will get different information from the different sources. In fact, the BMW web site said my car was still waiting for a ship for weeks after I had taken delivery. I had one instance where the Genius line told me one thing and the SA another. He checked again and found the same information. So what he saw in the morning was updated by the afternoon. Trust you SA and go by what he has unless you have reason to believe they are jerking you around.

Check the pictures in my build timeline those are screen shots. If that is what you have a PDF of your good.
  • 047 = order bank (aka dealer order request)
  • 111 = allocation assigned to order (aka order accepted), should have production number and ETA build week
  • 150 = VIN assigned

This was Niello BMW in Sacramento. When I asked to cancel my deposit, they changed their story again saying that BMW had mistakenly given them an allocation and BMW had cancelled the allocation. But they wanted me to keep my deposit with them, since they had an allocation coming up soon!

Their story has changed every time I talked to them... After this additional story change, I again asked for my deposit back. Not very trustworthy...

Similar story is currently happening to me with a dealer in Washington.

When allocations went out for the MY18's in early July, I got an email from my dealer with a pdf showing status 111 with a week 34 build. I was stoked. Two weeks later I made a change and the confirmation showed the status went back to 047. I called the dealer and got a BS answer that some allocations were pulled due to production at BMW. I then called BMW genius and they said that my production number still existed at the same dealership but with a different name and build options. I called the GM at the dealership and he said it looks like someone else had their deposit in before me so that person got the allocation and I should get mine in the "next couple of weeks". Again, sounded like BS to me. I'm not sure if the dealer is being shady or incompetent.

I had a tough time finding a trustworthy BMW dealer in Nor Cal when I was shopping for M2.

I found one in So Cal, Thomas BMW. Custom ordered last Jan. and arrived 4 months later.

Go So Cal, there's less BS.

Good luck!

You referring to Steve Thomas BMW? If so, you lucked out...

Yes, I was lucky to get one from them before Greed got them.

@OP, keep looking. You will find one, and hold your ground. MSRP (or less!)

That's a very sorry dealership to do something like that. It's like they don't realize their greed for a few thousand dollars more now will lead to very poor reviews and word of mouth that will cost them much more later.

Got a 047 status, but dealer said they don't know when they'll get the next allocation. Is that possible? I thought they should get new ones quarterly and I'm told I should be next.

It's possible they don't know yet but hopefully they'll get a fourth quarter allocation for you when they come out next month.
