I'm #2 with no deposit yet. Skip those guys.

If you're near Canton, I'd recommend giving Bobby Rahal BMW (Pittsburgh area) an opportunity. I'm #1 on their list with a $500.00 refundable deposit and guaranteed MSRP.

For those of you with a historical M perspective:

1) What has been the typical wait time before dealers start to negotiate down from MSRP?

2) When can ED discount be applied?

3) If you are not on #1 on the dealer list, when could you expect to get an allocation?

I would like to do a ED around July or September 2016 (so place the order in May). I figured this would give me a month or two to see/read about the car.

#2 on local M2 Allocation Waiting List. I'm wondering when we'll have a better idea as to exactly what will be offered with the M2 so I can decide on ordering one or an M4.

1) Eight or Nine months to ED invoice buys, IMO. Down from MSRP in a couple months.
2) Immediately, so long as the dealer is willing. ED requires approval of dealer (as well as BMW.)
3) Don't stick with one dealer. Individual dealers operate in different markets. Some are in rich markets some in not so rich markets. And, deals can pop up anytime. So, look in different market areas throughout the country for an allocation.

#1 with $1000 refundable. Receipt states purchase price as MSRP. Make sure that you get in writing that you are #x on the list regardless of whether you have a deposit down. Ask me how I know and why I have a 135is and not a 1M. (Hint: I mysteriously moved from #3 to #4 on the 1M list and only three were ultimately allocated to the dealer).

I wonder how much #4 paid over msrp to buy your spot at #3.

Unless you signed a sales purchase agreement, I don't think they can keep your money. I wouldn't do business with that dealership if they pressed for a "non refundable" deposit as opposed to a "good faith" deposit to hold your spot in line. Also, it's much better to use a credit card for any deposit so that if something does go south you can dispute the charge with your credit card company. American Express is fantastic when it comes to reversing charges.

The CA/ED advisor at Cain called me back later today and told me that they won't do ED at all. They are a smaller dealer and said with limited allocations they don't want to waste an allocation on a larger profit margin with the fixed amount they receive from a ED deal.

I respected his candor unlike the guy from Dave Walter who wanted tocharge USmsrp on a ED car.

I also called MAG in Dublin, OH. They want $2000 Semi-refundable deposit. I would be #2 on the list.

I haven't put my name on the list yet, as I have another year and change with my M235i.

I am however, very concerned about limited allocations/production.

Rest easy.
The car is scheduled for production until 2018. I read that somewhere (trust me ). Also that it is now considered a "Series" car. Meaning, I think, it will have more than a one year production life. Also, they expect to produce a total of 10,000 cars, world wide, over the scheduled production years.
So, with a 2018 time horizon, you're looking at 3 eight month production cycles.
Avoid the buying frenzy this year and you should be able to pick one up at ED invoice next year when the 2017 MY comes out - no problem.

My $0.02

A "Series" car is a BMW for the majority of customers, as in 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series. An M car is not a Series car. This distinction was made clear to us at a M event to drive newly introduced E92 M3s by an M employee. At that time, he said roughly 70% of the parts/panels, etc. in an M car came from a ground up design by BMW M and 30% from the Series car on which it was based. I am not suggesting you did not read it, but it is not likely and M2 is thought of as a Series car. That would be a sad day. It is likely it will be built like a Series car in Leipzig.

Do what I did, refundable deposit at a pre determined discount off list. I did mine last October and am number 1 on the dealer list. However in the end who knows if they will honor it. What if someone comes along and offers 2k over list?
