Do you think this rules out the convertible? http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/mo...oice-its-class

He ruled out an M2 convertible but said BMW would "have a look at" other versions of the car in the future.

With the M2 being positioned so close to the M235i in price, and the M235i being as good that it is, there is no business case for BMW to build the M2 Convertible.

And I think the article clarifies it.

For me it's the convertible or nothing.

I honestly don't see it happening - there struggling to make a coupé in reasonable numbers let alone a convertible..

However I think a M2 GTS/CSL/Whatever you want to call it could happen in a similar fashion to how the M4 GTS was. As in extremely limited numbers

Total BS - just like the BS from BMW about the roadster category dying.

There has been a business case for a convertible M car for every model of M3.

Once again, the fact that production for this car is so difficult likely highlights why they would not make a convertible. More cars removed from the line to fit parts = more delays to the line than just creating the M2.

Thanks for posting this. Lot's in the article, I think.
It's possible, I suppose, the interviewer may have misunderstood what the M Division guy was saying. But, leaving that aside, you have to acknowledge the reliability of the source. And, Judging from that, Id say the possibility of a convertible version is gone. At least for the the time horizon this fellow is looking at. And that horizon, IMO, is, at minimum, through the first life cycle (4 years?) Lots can change between now and then, though.

What's just as interesting to me are a couple of his other comments.

".....having a look at other models" IMO may refer to a GTS version of the car. I'd keep a sharp eye out for an M2 like mule, running around with that wing contraption strapped to its butt.
"The X5 and X6 M SUVs are now mainstays of the range..." was also an interesting comment because what it implies, to me, is the X5M and the X6M make the most money for the M Division. Not, as I would have guessed, the M4/M3 line.
The reference to his relationship with the i division means, IMO, the market will eventually see the Mi3 and Mi8.
Love his outlook on the manual transmission.

Thanks fuddman. My question probably appeared dumb but I was simply hoping that I missed something - especially considering "knowledgeable" posts elsewhere claiming the convertible is coming in 2017. Appreciate your insight and comments.

There is a thread on bimmerfest from ynguldyn where he suspects the F88 may be reality. Nothing confirmed yet. Who knows? If you think way back though, the M2 was also panned by an executive at BMW and that obviously wasn't true. BMW likes to keep its hand close to the chest.

Why waste this chassis on a vert? Get a 235 vert. Not like you have an S65 to listen to plus a car like this doesn't scream status. Make way for verts and autos - the mantra that is killing BMW. The only way to find a low mileage E46 that is pristine is usually because of the vert. Profit machine, garage queen. Most people don't even use their moonroofs.

I'm pretty sure they will make this before coming out with the GC. Which is a travesty.

Long live the M2GC and manual.

Thurman - I have a m235 convertible so no need to get. At least you and I agree on the manual - 50% agreement is not bad these days. Not interested in status -- simply like the m235 and know the m2 would be even better. I had my first bmw in 1972 and traded a 911 s for the m235 so know what I like. BMW made its first convertible in 1929.

As much as I love my M235i Cabrio, I'd buy an M2 cab in a heartbeat. Just in case anyone important is listening.

midlife: looks like our cars are somewhat (very) similar> I also had an m3 like you. my favorite is also an old one - my 2004 330 csi. I don't need it but can't let it go -- especially the steering as the modern steering will never feel like that again. Just to be clear, in case anyone is listening, there are two m235 convertible owners that would go the m2 convertible in a heartbeat!

I agree. But it seems clear as day.

With the entire auto industry deep in cost cutting and globalization I seriously doubt this car will ever see production.
