i8 gets individual colors. Can we expect M2 to follow?

Just saw on homepage that the i8 (built in leipzig) will now have individual colors offered. Considering the justification for the M2 not having individual was that leipzig wasn't equipped for it, can we expect individual colors to be offered on the M2?

It should also be available for the M2 because as you said, they are both made at the Leipzig plant. It would be great if more colors were offered for the M2.This will at least make it easier for people to make the argument that BMW should let people be able to order an individual color for the M2.

Is the i8 even painted in the "normal" paintbox?
Since it is a carbon fibre chassi I think most parts comes pre-painted from separate paintshops so this does not really translate to the M2 at all...

Is that true? Then why has it taken so long for the i8 to get individual colors...? Seems like it would have been easy if they were painted in specialty paint shops.

I was told by corporate that there are no plans to offer customization options on the 2 series at all, M included.

If you look at this video, the i8 doesn't even join the "normal" production flow until the very end. Not sure why it's taken so long to do Individual colors, but plastic parts do not go through a normal paint shop

The i8 is done off line as to speak and does not have the same application methods as the 2er.

Makes total sense... since the body panels come from suppliers off site, and then just in time to the Leipzig Werk.

I too was wondering WHY it has taken BMW so long to offer Individual paint colors at the Leipzig plant. Five years ago when I toured Leipzig I was told that in a year or two they will offer Individual paint colors for the 1er/2er's.

Leipzig is BMW"s most cutting edge factories... yet they still do not offer their customer's what they desire: special custom one off Individual paint color options.

I'm wondering if one day a major auto manufacturer will do away with the paint booths and just offer a base colour and then let the customer choose a body colour wrap of some type. Of course am over simplifying here but think about it. Paint booths are the most energy absorbing departments in the factory. Technology has the capability to create a mass produce wrap type of install, perhaps not easily but if they can mass produce CF components... they will find a cost effective solution. It sure would be nice to have your choice of wrap, the ability to chance it later and the protection along the way.

I wonder if it's more because of the cost of the cars they make? I think people are far less likely to opt for a $5000 paint job on a $40k X1, than someone that's buying a $70k 5 series.

Could be that someone crunched the numbers and it didn't make sense to do it for Leipzig. If anything, I'm more surprised that Spartanburg does not do full Individual (as far as I know), yet they are BMW's biggest volume producer.

BMW could at least change the colors out each model year instead of the same black/white/gray colors for the entire run. Maybe even change them half way thru the year.
Post a schedule of what colors will be available and when. Wouldn't have to change all the colors. Could even do a special color each month.

I would rather BMW didn't waste their time painting the car since they do the most horrible job next to Lada. I'd rather pay a reputable shop here $10000 to do it right.

Isn't the M235 made in Leipzig too? 7 colors are offered for it, so why couldn't that translate to the M2? Same goes for choice in leather.

They probably could but the price point of the car would be too close to M4.

The only reason the M2 costs as little as it does is because of these measures.

I didn't buy the M4 because I couldn't get it in Red, I was about to sign the papers for a Sahkir Orange one but I finally got to see one in person instead of photos, its not even close to red like the photos make it look. I am on the fence of getting an M2 because it doesn't come in Red. I really hope they release a red. I can never justify buying a new car only to pay $5k for a color that should be standard. Or buying the M2 and paying to have a wrap put on it.

The color choice of BMW this last few years has pushed me closer and closer to getting a GTR.

You can get an M4 in red through the individual program. There was a thread here recently for an M4 (or maybe M3?) in ferrarri red. If I find the link I'll post it.
