SUV selection help

l am struggling to fill the third spot in the garage. This summer all the cars got replaced and I just can't find the right choice for this one. I live in Colorado and have to deal with snow 4 months a year. I have an M235 for my daily during the rest of the year (parked in winter). Wife drives a 328d wagon. What I need is a car that has:
1. 4wd/awd.
2. Some offroad capability. We like to explore but not a crawler.
3. Better utility that the wagon.
4. Used, $30k max.
5. Not stupid unreliable.
6. Not a total gas hog but won't see a lot of miles.
7. Comfortable to be in. Modern.
8. Not really big.

I had a Tacoma but sold it, didn't need a truck anymore. I had an ML320 diesel but it was high miles and I gave it to my son. I've owned a Wrangler before, that's not it. On a whim I bought a used FJ Cruiser. Just don't really like it.

Cars I've considered so far. 4Runner. A bit big. Grand Cherokee, big, unreliable. Cherokee Trailhawk. Crazy unreliable. Touareg diesel. I like diesels.

Not interested in Rovers or G-wagon.

X3 offroad? If I did GC I'd look for the diesel.

Actually the E400 4x4 squared caught my eye but I'm guessing it'll be out of budget too.

4th generation 4Runner. I love my 2006 so much that when I had to choose between selling it or my e46 M3, I sold the M3. 105K miles on it and still rock solid. Smaller than the current version 4Runner. Gets 20 MPG average (V6).
