Part of the problem is that it is not clear to me what I will be getting for my $199/year as some of the features appear to be a part of the Safety plan and other come with the Convenience plan (which I believe is an additional $199/year).

I don't know but my subscription does not end until late 2018, so it was a no brainer for me. Probably sell before and felt added value.

Anyone with "analog out" stereo coding and an aftermarket amp have the combox retrofit done?

I have the above and I'm trying to figure out what I'm in for. I saw one post an owner with an amp was told the factory amp had to go back in for the retrofit which would be a pain.

I just bought a '13 M5 CPO. It was sold in 08/13 but I believe manufactured 01/13.

It has BMW assist until 08/17 according to my login on BMW ConnectedDrive.

I called BMW assist and the guy said "sorry sir, your car will stop working with BMW assist at the end of december, you have to talk to BMW NA to get a retrofit if you want to continue it"

He forwarded my call to BMW NA who said "BMW Assist is wrong, the car does not have the 2G combox, it has the newer technology and there is nothing you need to do"

I called BMW Assist guys again and (pretended) asked if I could extend my services or buy concierge service. They said nope, the car won't work anyways.

Can I check the hardware myself? The combox unit is somewhere in the trunk right?

Edit: Vin Decode says Prod. date 2012-10-11

You can just plug in the last 7 of the VIN

BMW ConnectedDrive provides you with a suite of safety, convenience and infotainment services that add peace of mind and confidence throughout your day.

BMW ConnectedDrive intelligently integrates the driver, the vehicle and the environment. Included within ConnectedDrive is BMW Assist™, which uses advanced technology to bring the focused attention of a response specialist to your aid whenever needed. Combining an integrated wireless phone for communication and a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receiver to determine your vehicle's location, the BMW Assist™ system conveniently helps to deliver both occupant security and peace of mind. On suitably equipped 2007 through 2013 models and 2014 X6 Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW Assist™ Safety Plan is part of BMW ConnectedDrive, included at no cost for four years from your BMW's in-service date.

SPECIAL NOTE: After December 31, 2016, the on-board cellular technology used for delivering numerous BMW ConnectedDrive / BMW Assist features will no longer be supported on most 2013 and earlier vehicles, 2014 X6, 2015 and earlier X1, and 2016 and earlier Z4 vehicles. Affected customers whose BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive contract is active past this date will be contacted by BMW. If you believe your vehicle may be affected, please visit
www.BMWAssistOffer.com and enter the last 7 characters of your VIN. If you are affected, you will be guided through selecting your preferred offer.

Thanks -- I tried a few times but I just get:

"You have entered an invalid VIN. Please re-enter for validation."

Does that mean I'm in good shape?

Could be. Otherwise, you would be brought to a screen to choose one of the 3 options.
I have a build date after yours (June 2013) and was impacted by this. I got the retrofit done and when I did a search for my VIN, I get a message that my selection was completed, which is true.

The BMW Assist people are wrong. BMW NA is correct.

The 2013 M5 has the NBT navigation system and a 3G-based TCB (Telematic Control Box). NBT systems do not have a Combox at all (the Combox was integrated into the NBT head unit for media and the TCB was added for Telematics).

Your system will continue to work after Jan 1, 2017.

I know this personally because I have a 2013 M5 with services booked until 2018.

Depends on your circumstances. For me, I have more than a year left on my factory included service. So factoring the cost of the service per year, the cost of the upgraded module, the labor, and the fact I can't get the retrofit later even if I wanted to pay for it, made me go for the upgrade.

And no, there's nothing extra sticking out.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I just need to get BMWAssist to take my money now somehow.

I thought NBT = the new bigger idrive knob with touch capability. Will have to read up on the system in my car.

NBT has old ZBE iDrive Controller in first year of F10 Production. The following year, ZBE touch was added.

Yeah, the 2013 5-series was the first vehicle to get the NBT system and the 2013 model vehicle came with the older style controller.

Touch controls came in MY2014 for the 5-series and some other models, all other models got in it MY2015.

Just a follow up: I took the time to disconnect my retrofit NBT and reconnect the combox before bringing in my car for the retrofit. Took about 40 mins total all they really did was disconnect the combox and ... put a black sticker over the SOS button. I expected a new plate to replace bring button or a new cover etc.

I asked what the procedure was for an upgrade and the guy said they just replace compbox.

Does anyone know if the dealer has to charge full MSRP or 'retail' price on the parts or can they sell the accessories at below MSRP but their designated 'retail' price?

My SA told me the comm box was $600 and 3 hours of labor, somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000.

*Just wanted to provide an update here.

Did the recall this week. Took two days, got a loaner car. I told SA that i coded car a bit, the SA said it did not need to reprogram the system.

When i was picking up the car, they said they found a faulty code on my gear shifter when upgrading the combox. When i was coding the car, I did change the standard auto to sporty auto, not sure if that was the reason. So they did reprogram the car and updated my gear selector as well (from standard plastic bottom one to the sporty one). I guess it was worth it.

Took mine in yesterday since it was due for 20k service. I have only coded my bluetooth audio and it's still working so... all good on my end.

Picked the VISA gift card

Anyone know if the $300 gift card could be used to towards the BMW CF rear spoiler? My dealer couldn't give me a clear answer and said it would be $480 out the door without the gift card. Is there a dealership online that would honor it for that part?

I spoke with BMW NA about having to buy parts locally or not. She told me that I could either call directly any BMW dealer and order, or have my dealership call and facilitate the sale. I clarified that I might want to order from an out of state dealer because their prices would be so much better. Just make sure everyone is aware of the promo code (or whatever) while you're doing it and you can order from wherever you like. It just has to be from BMW directly for them to be satisfied.

I forgot to ask if it would only be toward Lifestyle stuff, or if it would also apply toward vehicle accessories and M Performance parts.

I bought a 2013 X5 in July.
I opted for the retrofit. My car was within the 4 years, 50K miles.
Sent my dealer the information last week. Car went in today for the retrofit.
They estimate done by Thursday.
Zero cost (except for subscription) made it a no-brainer.
My wife drives the X5 most of the time.
