BMW M2 side mirrors: a solution for 'the missing stubby' ?
Yeah, as regards side mirrors, BMW M could have topped it off in the usual ///M fashion, but didn't do it this time. It remains unclear why. An infinite pinch of better aerodynamics ?
For the M2, neither a complete side mirror redesign was needed nor an M3/M4 transplant. Simply the small, low-cost effort for BMW M to design a side mirror cap featuring a stubby on top, to create the same look and feel of many ///M cars. If BMW gets too many questions about 'the missing stubby' design detail, it may consider designing a dedicated ///M mirror cap as ///M Performance Part. Likely in carbon fiber, to have a one-fits-all-colors part. Examples of aftermarket's better take on F22 2er side mirrors: here and here. What BMW M defines as "Exterior ///M Design Icons": M2: M2 with rendered ///M style mirrors: F22 2er aftermarket side mirror CF cap: Or stick with it and get the OEM M Performance carbon wing mirror caps for the M2:

The funny thing is M5 and M6 don't have the so called M mirrors either.
I think everyone was expecting it because the 1M had it and everyone was thinking it's not on the mules because it was added last on the 1M mules. Honestly it doesn't make a difference to me. It's the whole package that matters. Sure it would have been cool to have the M3/4 mirror. But think of it this way does one want the M2 to have it's own identity or to copy and take identical visual parts from other cars? |

Like I said in one of the other threads, the lack of different mirrors isn't (in and of itself) a deal breaker. However, the subtle styling "upgrades" that distinguish an M from a non M are always appreciated and help set the car apart. This seems like an easy one for BMW to include on the M2 - unlike the CF roof, different hood w/ a bulge, etc.
Not a deal breaker...but sort of a dumb omission...

Do we even know for sure it will not have M mirrors? As far as I know those are just renders.
M mirrors or not I will still keep my number 1 spot at my dealer. When these come available from IND It will be sure on my list to order them quickly.

The question relates to whether BMW should have walked the usual extra mile (thus as they always did in the recent past) by designing a side mirror, or side mirror cap, with a modern ///M look and feel. This to further distinguish the M2 from the regular 2er. BMW M didn't walk that extra mile this time for this car part, and personally I think that's a missed opportunity. The football was right in front of an empty goal, but BMW M decided not to kick it inside (for now). Oh well, maybe they want to keep some goodies for BMW M Performance Parts, the future M2 LCI or - only BMW knows - the M2 CSL ?

Whilst mirrors alone shouldn't put anyone off buying a car, many will see the lack of ///M mirrors as the "tip of the iceberg" in a number of "///M" styling cues missing from this car.

If the M2 cant even get mirrors, i cant see an M2 CSL getting a hood bulge or a CF roof. I'd love to be wrong though.

Sometimes I wonder what goes through the heads of these suits at big companies? It's like they have no "enthusiast" blood in their bodies. Not a major performance downgrade or anything, but subtle omissions like this are noticed easily by M customers. Even if they had to increase the price slightly, it would have been a win-win... Regardless, from these early pics (render or not render), I am liking it. Especially with some mods, I think it's going to look great on the street. |

I wonder if there will be a way that the M3/4 mirrors could be utilized on the car after the fact?
Might be complicated from the folding/dimming/angling down standpoint, but if you were willing to live without that functionality...might be an option.

Hope that's not the case - marketing should be presented with the product and then they work their respective magic...the engineers and bean counters are more of the front end decision makers. I would hazard a guess that there was some sort of cost savings associated with the omission, aka, accounting guys made the decision.

It's not a deal breaker for me, but it does seem strange that they didn't use the M mirror.

LOL. Maybe only Long Beach Blue gets the 'regular' side mirrors.

Oh yeah! Ha, I work on the tech side and we are in a constant tug-of-war with marketing for features.
Although I would actually think marketing would be in favor of the more aggressive styled mirrors. Makes the product more "desirable" and "fancy." Words that marketing loves... lol! |

In the old days some cars didn't even come with a set of side mirrors. I'm just glad they come standard.
I might even remove them if today's rendered article is accurate. |

I'm shocked at all the whining about the mirrors. Are you really going to be admiring the mirrors when you are hauling a$$ around a racetrack? Or will you care when the MSRP is 51k?
Cmon guys. The car looks great. One bonus maybe from the mirror fallout is that I can get one for MSRP at launch. |
