The fact that the M2 is the only car left still produced using the N55 means that there is a good chance that the B58 will be in it from next year. Surely it isn't economical for BMW to be producing this engine when it's only for the M2.

It's also in the X4 M40i.

I thought it's already confirmed as N55 in the LCI as people have already taken delivery? Or do you mean that '18 cars will get an engine swap? I'd hate to be a '17 LCI owner if that's the case. |

I am actually quite interested in seeing what is going to happen in March when the M2 CS is released.Ynguldyn already confirmed that the M2 CS is going to get the S55 engine and be a MY19 model year car.So what happens to the regular M2?Maybe it also changes to the MY19 model year in March and gets the B58 engine. It doesn't make sense to keep making the MY18 M2 in March if the M2 CS is being released as a MY19 in March.

2018 is still N55 - some already delivered in Europe. Some of us are guessing it may disappear next year in '19 models though.

I'm not waiting - I'd be happy with either N55 or B58 (but I'm getting another N55). We're all just speculating anyway.

LCI is still N55, but there is reason to believe that BMW could either go with the B58 per the new X3 M40i, or even just drop the regular M2 when the CS comes. But no don't wait base on rumours. I am still going ahead with the LCI myself.

How long has BMW traditionally waited before producing any M version of a motor? A few years.

Haha I may be opening a can of worm here but the M2 engine is not a "M" engine as such. That would be the S58 which will debut in the X3M. The M2, if it gets a B58, will likely use the same B58 engine as in the X3 M40i.

Same historical precedent holds for the top-output variants.

It would also make little sense to drop in a new motor for one model year only to have the entire platform replaced a year later. My guess is they will continue to run the cs, discontinue the standard after 2019 my (final production being early 2019), and roll out the gts limited as the going away party for this gen 2 series. |

This is why my guess is that the std M2 will live on when the CS comes out, and it might just get the B58 for 2019 and 2020. It wouldn't be an unprecedented move and, at any rate, it's fun to speculate.
