Solid review, but need to see a write up coming from someone who isn't a Bimmerpost guy.

There's got to be a bias here, no?

That said, agree completely with assessment of m3 and m4.

Thanks Sam, great driving and review.

Looks like a fantastic car that recaptures the playfulness of older generations M's!

About the few niggles in this car, such as disabling the automatic rev matching, I'm pretty sure someone will find a way to do it with a new encode, likewise for the active sound...

They probably mean the instrument cluster, the M2 or 2 Series in general don't have a heads up display as you can see clearly in this pic

Thanks for the review Sam.

Multiple reviewers have commented about the engine's ability to keep pulling strong all the way to redline. That's really good news! That was probably the only uncertainty I had about the M2. It seems like a stellar car.

I'm happy for all the people that want to purchase this car. It seems like you can't go wrong.

To the left of the orange M Dynamic Mode dash light (which comes on in sport+), did anyone else notice that additional driving nannies appeared to be coming on, especially as he powered out of corners? Any thoughts?

It was still fun and undoubtedly faster than the E9x, but I didn't see the value in upgrading to it from the E9x I had given what it would cost. The M5/6 have even more trouble putting their power down, but I would nonetheless argue that they're even more sanitized than the M3/4, because they're designed to be. I don't think one has any real relationship to the other.

I agree though that if I had to buy a new BMW today, it would be an M2 by the sounds of it.
Here we go, this is what I was trying to say. This is from the Top Gear review

With all the series and models that BMW has now, and all the X3, X4, X5, X6, X-1, MX0.4M and iCars, with the 5, 6 and 7 series becoming tanks, the M3/M4 increasing a good amount in size, with no MCoupes that look like shoes, and the slow death of the manual.... it is great to see the BMW M2 getting the superlatives it deserves.

.. M2 ... 3 pedals ....4ever

With the both of them sharing suspension components, I imagine the M2 puts the power down better simply because it isn't as powerful as the M4.

Can't seem to find it anywhere either on their brochures and online configurators... Strange so probably does not exist!

This is a good question. I think the e9x does maintain something special and that's its naturally aspirated V8. It's a great engine and something we no longer get. But in terms of steering, chassis, shift feel (both manual and auto), I think it's outclassed by the modern machinery. If you've already got one, I would give the M2 a thorough test drive before making a decision to trade. A lot of the differences between the two will be down to preference.

FWIW, here is how I would rank my current order of preference:

M2
E46 M3
E9x M3
F8x M3 M4

This is just me, and what I kind of driving experience I prefer. It's very personal and I'm not saying one car is better than another. Your list might be totally different from mine.

Did you happen to have the executive package option in either M2's? Wondering if you messed with any of those options.
Sorry, nope. Didn't have the time to really explore beyond the core essentials. These press launches are actually really hectic and stressful. We're up at 6am, get to the track by 7:30, press conference and then drives. In between driving, I also have to fit in all my B-Roll photography, eating lunch, partnering with people and signing out cars, and managing my 20 pounds of gear and batteries. If I got a car later on for a normal week long test, I would get into more of this. Not saying your question was invalid, but I've been looking for an opportunity to share what these press launches are like.

Thank you for your very kind comment. I appreciate it and I'm so glad all that came across for you.

I really put everything I had into this video and I'm so relieved now that it's done and most of all, something you guys like and enjoy. There is a lot of reward in that for me.

For sure, it's an awkward looking thing from the profile. But so was the Z3 M Coupe and I still love that. Just like the Z3 Coupe the M2 is an oddball BMW and now that I know exactly how it drives, I love everything about it. Even its flaws.

Traction is just fine. You'll only ever have to watch traction on corner exits, but you'll only lose the tail in the dry if you're doing it on purpose. In the video, I was totally doing it on purpose.

You're a wise man to keep both.

If there's nothing wrong with your E46 M3, don't let go just yet. You can always buy this M2 in a year or two down the road, but you won't find another flawless E46.

Like I said, I've only driven the M235i, but that felt much more like a friend that you can't ask too much from than the M3/4. I would expect the same from the M2, which is a really great thing.
jphughan interpreted as I meant it. Sanitized as in disconnection, not power or the ability to smoke tires. I know the M3/4 can smoke rubber.

I agree, lack of traction or ability to put down all its power does not necessarily imply connection.
