Take the M4.

If given the choice between an M3/4 or M2 - I'd take the big brother every time.

Good things come to those who wait. Do you really want an M2 now?

No reason to get one right now at these prices.. In california at least ..i did find a m2 cross country slightly less mid 60k--but after $2500 closed trailor shipping it negated Any cost savings....

Think i will look at car tomorrow in real life and if i love it
Will discuss ordering time frames.but im sure theyre waiting for the big pay .for the one on lot... Also will take the CPO m4 For a spin .. Might be path of least resistence and also more car for the $$

I've had the same consideration - if you can afford that much for either car then go with the M4. Once the demand goes down and the markup is gone, your M2 will be that much more depreciated.

You'd have to be nuts to pay M4 money for a M2. If you can spend mid to high 60's definitely buy the M4 (or M3). I'd probably order a M3/M4 new euro delivery. M2 is a low/mid 50's car not a 60-70K car.

I have an M2 on order with production number in hand, but lately Im disliking the jumpiness of my 235 on high speed highway(80-90, speed limit is 70). I still dont know if I will pull the trigger or not. How is your m3 optioned?

Sorry my info is outdated as i was on this site in 2012 for 1m conversations.. I had a 2011 e92 m3 comp pak ... Wish i would have kept it with the nat asp v8! But eventually the gas guzzler got to me so i went to a wrx .. Now a 428i .. Which Looks great w gran coupe m pkg but just not enough punch for me. After all the feedback is does seem rediculous now to go over 60k for the m2. And honestly might be too small for me .. But will checkout tommorrow at dealer in person and ask about ordering .. Are you allocated with a dealer in bay area?

Agree. Thats the bottom line..ill enjoy either one.. But a already semi-depreciated CPO 2016 3k miles loaded m4 vs a overinflated 2016 m2 both about 67-68k today . I would be eating a lot of crow in a year or two with a big loan balance and probably upside down possibly 10-15k more on baby brother m.

Well, this is a tough question. I actually drive the M2 the most, because my wife drives the M4 more, I also have an e92 M3, which I also love. It all depends on the driver. The cars are all very different. The M4 is a beast. Really powerful. When you drop the hammer in that car, it is way different than doing the same in the M2 or e92. However, the M2 is a more "balanced" car. It feels like the power is a great match to very thing else. The car can handle the power it puts down and I do like a smaller car. Then, the e92 is also balanced, but being a NA V8, it pulls so differently. It just wants to keep going. They are all great in their own right. I don't think you'd be disappointed by the switch. I never miss the extra power, even though the M4 is noticeably more powerful. If you're going to take it to the drag strip, keep the M4. You can't go wrong, honestly.

FWIW, I have a mid 60's M2 because carbon bits and MPE. Can I get an M4 for that money? Sure. Will it be loaded like the M2? No it won't. Will I inevitably want all of the stuff on the M4? Of course, including ZCP. That puts it firmly in an 80k range, maybe less if you can negotiate it down a few grand but good luck doing that on a ZCP. Drive-ability on the street? Probably the same.

But that's still a lot more money.

Sure you get more car and it has a nicer interior and more power (you're paying more so I'd hope so), but to me the M2 made me enjoy cars again and that's something the M4 can't replicate. As much as I want an M4, it was never a serious I'd put my own money down thing.

The M4 would be great all things being equal, which in your case it is depending on M4, but it certainly isn't when you take everything into consideration (options).

If you can be patient, there's plenty of dealers you can get on a list for at MSRP. But you may be waiting 6 months or realistically more.

All that having been said, I'd never pay markup for a non limited car.

$.02

Im on the opposite end of the US in Pembroke Pines, FL. I figure is someone is going to take a hit on a m3 trade in and then pay a premium for the M2 I have on order...AND pay tax on that, then I should be able to get an m3 for cheap and keep all that profit out off the dealers hands and make 2 enthusiasts very happy.

Didn't read the entire thread but it seems like you could drive the M4 for a year or two. If you like it great, if not sell it and get the M2 once prices have stabilized. The loss on the M4 compared to a big markup on the M2 say 10k, and you're really driving the M4 for next to nothing.

Agreed. I had a e92 a hunky beast with real engine sounds and think thats why im going back to a m. Normally a 57k m2 and 80k m4 would gravitate me towards the more simplistic and practical m2 as a dd. Currently with the big markups on baby m and a local hardly driven m4 coupe makes these two almost identical in price. The m4 seems naturally the better deal and way more car for the $$. But the uniqueness of the m2 and balance as you say & nimble small car fun makes me lean towards it too. The good news all different but still great cars .. I just couldnt pay 10-12 over on the m2 and feel good about myself! 5 over .... Maybe .... Lol

CA is probably different than other parts of the country in terms of this, but I told the dealer to shove it when they wanted 5k over for a GT350. 2 months later they were calling me back at MSRP. Nope. (I also called 250+ other dealers and similar story on ADM).

Sounds like you know what you want and are comfortable with. Go drive the M4 and if you like it, you absolutely won't go wrong.

You said you missed the 1M boat. Get on the M2 waitlist for MSRP, buy a 1M for $50K and sell it when you M2 eventually gets delivered in a year or so. Most likely you'll get back what you paid for the 1M. The $7-10K you are about to burn on mark-up can go to keeping the 1M in good shape.

Saw both today.... The m2 was pretty mean looking but the m4 was just above and beyond as far as style and class.. And hp and.... Everything else
Since they wouldnt negotiate too much below 10k over on the m2 its a no brainer .. Now just gotta crunch numbers and wheel n deal on the m4

I'm exactly on the same boat though I'm preferring to buy an M3 ZCP manual vs M2 DCT + M performane parts. They both end at around 68K.

Good choice! I love the M4 and would pick it over the M2 if it wasn't out of my budget.

Outstanding advice , and I bet you he drops off the M2 waitlist and keeps the 1M if he follows your steps ...

I was able to help a friend find one locally for $1.5k over sticker. This is by far the lowest markup out there so far.

I was thinking about why the production is so low on this M2.
Other than greed and evil possibilities, the only compelling reason I found was that BMW didn't want to go full blown on a first gen production model with so many parts that are different from an M235i/M240i.

So many pieces that can go wrong together.
I'm not a Goldman Sachs chief economist, but it doesn't take too much math to figure out that BMW is missing tons of sales with these low production figures.

Sure, for M/AMG cars, they want to keep the production low so they don't have cars sitting on the lots for several months, but BMW doesn't benefit a lot from the dealers' markups either.
