Car quieter after Dinan resonator delete??

Hi All,

Really confused as I just installed the Dinan resonator delete on my car and I swear it seems quieter now. It previously had just the Dinan muffler with the stock resonator in place. I was looking for a more aggressive sound which I thought I would get with the resonator delete. Completely illogical, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t less aggressive now.

I did reset the throttle adaptations before I started the car post-install. Procedure here:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1669584

Could the reset somehow have closed the valves or done something else to quiet the car down? I went through all the driving modes and each consistently seemed quieter than it was pre-resonator delete.

Thx

That’s very odd, the resonator will not really quiet things down, it just cancels out rasp (resonate frequencies)

Something else is happening here…

+1 , something else is going on or you just remember your stock car being more aggressive than it actually is

download the DB app on your phone and check the loudness, then compare it to another user with a stock setup

I have run just about every variation of this exhaust setup (stock exhaust, stock exhaust with sport cat, sport cat with Dinan res delete and stock muffler, sport cat with Dinan res delete and Dinan muffler, sport cat with Dinan muffler and stock resonator), there is no way that replacing the stock resonator with the Dinan delete made your car quieter.

Possible issues that could be the actual issue:
1. Just mistaken memory
2. If the spring or actuator on the Dinan muffler valve was somehow unseated during the resonator work the valve may be stuck shut (on first install I had the actuator installed incorrectly and the valve was stuck open regardless of the setting on my Macht Schnell valve controller)

Otherwise, it is not really possible for the removal of a resonator to quiet down the exhaust. The main differences I experience with the stock resonator vs. the delete (keeping in mind I have a sport cat so the exhaust is louder and more aggressive than your setup):
1. Significantly more turbo spool noise near idle engine speeds.
2. More peak volume (minor but noticeable change).
3. Significantly more drone between 2-3K rpm with moderate load i.e. consistent 75mph driving up hill

I agree that it makes no logical sense. The throttle reset procedure must have tamed down or reset some sound parameter, be it the valves or the ASD. It wasn't subtly quieter, it was noticeable.

Good news is that after a few days, the exhaust has become a bit more aggressive. Not much louder than it was before, but it is a bit nastier than it was which is exactly what I was expecting. Nothing earth shattering, but a bit more aggression. Love it. The fitment sucks though, might bring it to an exhaust shop to see what they can do on that.

The stock resonator is weird, period.

I can tell you for sure that paired with my Fabspeed sport-cat, the Dinan resonator delete produced no more cabin noise at all, but gave me a bit more external volume. Um, that's not what a resonator is for...

And I can tell you for sure that the early MPE had no resonator and would drone like crazy in the cabin at certain rpm's, but re-fitting the stock exhaust resonator cured 90% of it.

In other words, the resonator being present or absent has the most effect if you have a back-box. Beyond that it's not worth doing.
