I noticed some small, bright orange things on the chrome part of the side grill just below the "2" (see picture).

I can't tell if it's residue or some rust?! I tried scraping semi-hard with my nail to see if it comes off but it didn't.

Does someone recognize it or have any hints on how to safely try to remove it?

You probably need to zoom the picture to see it. And I know it's not a biggie but I'd gladly try to remove it before buying a replacement.
