Excessive clutch chatter?

Has anyone noticed clutch chatter at low speed?

I have had this ever since I purchased the car (6 months ago). It happens while slowly moving such as pulling into the garage or into a parking spot. It's audible outside the car and especially inside. I've owned many manual cars and have never experienced this, even in the f80 m3. Maybe I just need an exhaust so I can't notice it

Mine does the same but to me it's pretty muted.

Yeah mine is loud too. Just think it’s part of the design.

Normal. My M235 does it too and done it since day 1 over two years ago. It's the nature of the dual mass flywheel. You can really hear it when you're in a garage or similar.

Dual mass usually makes noise at idle but I have never heard one make noise while slowly taking off in first gear... At least it does not happen all the time.

I always think about switching over but at the moment I am still loving a manual. Unless I'm in traffic lol.

My brand new M2 is the same. had plenty of MINI's with DM Flywheels but none have this problem/sound. Feels like the clutch is not flat when it hooks up. Maybe it will get better as it gets run in....

That's exactly what it seems like. Mine has 5,000 miles on it now and still sounds the same. At least the noise is not getting worse. Sounds like a cheap car when driving in traffic or out of a parking spot though.

Reminds me on the Kawasaki Mach 3 and 4 clutches. Used to sound worse than the M2. Like someone next to you was shaking a can full of screws!
I was expecting better from BMW.
Like they have the new more powerful model coming up so they get rid of all the crappy clutches that can't handle 400+ HP in the last of the N55 engine cars....
We have already seen how these German companies behave with the "clean" diesels....anything is possible...just saying...

Both of my JCW Minis did the same exact thing. Again, it's normal.

Mine also does this. Mine is most prominent when its either cold or have been sitting in traffic for a long time. It has been bothering me but I guess good to know its just the nature of the beast.

Must be normal. I have found that It helps to rev it a little more than normal before take off. This usually eliminates the problem. Just have to get used to it.

Luckily there is very minimal chatter at idle. My 135i sounded like a cement mixer at idle lol.

You wouldn't know if you had chatter even if you had it.

No chatter here guys. 6MT.

I assuming it is being caused by build up or hot spots?

No. It's the dual mass flywheel. It's there, it's just you're not driving in areas that amplify the sound.

Amazing, how you know where I drive?

I still have no chatter. If it's there, it is there. If it's not, it is not.

Well, poor driving would be a big contributing factor to hot spots or clutch material transfer on the flywheel... so, yes. Hot spots/transferred material can cause clutch engagements to experience a stutter effect, which could induce rattling.

As for the chatter during clutch engagement, it's largely from it being a dual mass flywheel, although they're designed to be more comfortable rather than for performance, and one of the biggest benefits is supposed to be smoother clutch engagement and more drive-ability in traffic. However, the funny thing is they can end up sounding a lot like a lightweight flywheel rattling around.

If anyone has OEM weight specs on the the flywheel, I'd be curious to know.
