Are early f87s rare? Problematic?
Hi all. Long time BMW owner (mostly older though, 2004-2012s 3 series primarily) but new to M2’s. I have my eye on a 2016 that seems to be in great shape, fairly low miles, and a decent price (I think). I will of course have a per purchase inspection done at an Indy shop I trust that only works on BMWs)
I’m having problems finding comparables. Lots of 2018’s out there, a few 2017, but I don’t think I have seen another 2016. Are they that rare? Or just luck of the draw. There is no difference between those years is there? Other than options car to car of course. Comps got the s55. Is there other running changes? Anything to be leery of on a 16? Thanks! |

While 16 was the first year of the F87 it was not the first year of any major drivetrain components as it is a parts bin car from other models. I would have no concern on a 16 in that regards, however in the US each year brought some option changes which many people value so I'd learn of those differences and figure out how much you value those.

Condition/milage/service/owners wins over options.
The OG (16-17) according to me has better looking Dash, cluster and rear lights. But who cares about How the lights look? Can’t see them when you drive. When I was searching this was the options I Wanted: Manual No nav (never use it) Slicktop Manual seats

It's just speculation, but I think people who got the 16 models love it and are just hanging on to it. I'm not sure but don't think as many were made also.
The 16 was a steal IMO. I love my 18 with the updates, but regretted not just being patient and ordering a 16 when I had the chance. |

Throwing my two cents in - I bought a '16 M2 on July 2023 with 44k miles, already added another 9k miles and had no issues besides having to correct previous mechanic's differential re-seal. The excitement and courage to just go and drive this thing still hasn't gone away.
From what I know from the previous owner and the dealership service history I got, the car had nothing major done other than some fuel tank+fuel pump issues around 8k miles and then just basic maintenance like spark plugs, oil, brake fluid and filters. I was also looking for LCI in the first place, mainly because of the headlights but now it turns out I love the pre-lci ones much more, I swapped the rear lights for used LCI ones for 100$ (it's actually funny how cheap they are in Europe) and the physical gauge cluster is a big plus for me |

I bought one of the first M2s which was MY2017. I took delivery 9/2016. I don't believe there was a MY2016.
The ONLY complaint, I remember was the dash. I thought the gray looked very nice but it was impossible to see in some lighting situation. When lit it was fine. Typically, something like that would bother me but it didn't. The only reason, I changed was b/c I traded it for a 2020 M2C. That one's never leaving my garage. If you're interested in a M2. I'd search for an LCI to get the newer dash and LED headlights/taillights. The other item to check is that the car has perpetual Apple CarPlay as it was an option that not everyone purchased. |

That was one of the cars that BMW ships to dealers at introduction, right? H?? something cars?
Point is MY2016 was a limited number of cars. If this page is correct, ~713 NA cars of which only 98 made it to CA, probably why they cannot find any used ones. https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1404565 So was it rare? No. Just a short run before the factory shutdown in August for vacations; produced for dealers so customers could see an touch one before ordering . If I remember correctly most were sold as soon as they landed. Last edited by omasou; 01-10-2024 at 11:11 AM.. |

2016 look the best, best looking rear lights, best dash which in the future will look class and finally you get a knee rest with the blue stitching which was taken away from LCI onwards cars.

I had no idea the pre-LCI models had lovely blue stitching on the knee pad! Good to know! On the other hand, in an ingnorance-is-bliss sorta way, I didn’t know what I was missing ‘til now. |
